Thornburg to try record run with Phaedo3
Lloyd Thornburg will be attempting a record run from Antigua to Bermuda on board his 70ft offshore racing trimaran Phaedo3 next month.
Thornburg’s one-design MOD70 multihull has been in the limelight lately having established multiple world records over the past 12 months, including the Antigua to Newport passage, taking just three days, 5hr 55min 12 sec to complete the 1,560-nautical mile course.
Phaedo3 is expected to embark on its record run after April 18 with a view to registering for the Antigua Bermuda Race next year.
Fifteen yachts ranging from 43ft to 139ft have already registered their interest for the inaugural race. Yachts from all over the United States, Britain, Bermuda and Antigua are among the early entries, which include supermaxis, maxi racing yachts, classics, performance blue water cruisers and high performance multi hulls. Joining the schooner America and sloop Spirit of Bermuda will be two British maxi yachts, Peter Harrison’s 115ft ketch Sojana and Mike Slade’s maxi 100 Leopard 3.
Also among the early entries is Les Crane, chairman of the Antigua Bermuda Race and past commodore of the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, who is taking part in the race on board his Farr 56 Monterey.
The 935-nautical mile race from Antigua to Bermuda will start on May 12 after the 50th edition of Antigua Sailing Week. Competing yachts will arrive in Bermuda for the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers, the 35th America’s Cup Match, America’s Cup Superyacht Regatta, J Class Regatta and the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup.
