Spanish Point Boat Club sailor Benn Smith continued his superb form on day two of the Digicel Dinghy Regatta in the Great Sound yesterday.

The 16-year-old Saltus student holds a ten-point advantage at the top of the Laser Radial standings heading into today’s final day of the invitational regatta and appears to be reaping the benefits from all of the hard work he put into training in the lead up to the regatta.

“I have been training a lot these past weeks leading up to the event, and I am happy with the way things have gone so far,” Smith said.

The son of Malcolm Smith, the former world sunfish champion, has dominated the racing fleet over the past two days, posting seven firsts and finishing no lower than second in the nine races so far contested in stiff breezes in the single handed Olympic-class Laser Radial dinghy.

In second is the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club’s Mikey Wollmann followed by Team Bermuda Red Bull Youth America’s Cup sailor and Smith’s training partner Peter Dill in third.

Seasoned sailor Brett Wright and Olympic-bound sailor and Team Bermuda Red Bull Youth America’s Cup squad member Cecilia Wollmann round off the top five in the class.

Cecilia Wollmann, who also sails out of the RHADC, leads the women’s field and is fifth overall.

Yesterday’s sailing in the Laser Radial did not go without incident as Canadian John Breare broke the mast on his boat in the seventh race which put him out of the game for the remainder of the day’s races.

Meanwhile, sheltered from the strong breezes in Granaway Deep is the Optimist class where RHADC’s Tayte Stefanuik tops the leaderboard leads by a nine-point margin over nearest rival Jordan Etemadi, of the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, with Rian Geraghty, also of the RBYC, a further nine points adrift in third.

Sebastian Kempe, son of past RBYC Commodore Somers Kempe, and Micah Thomas Raynor round off the top five boats in the single handed Optimist class.

Only two of the three classes were in action yesterday as the Comet fleet remained ashore.

After Thursday’s three races reigning national Comet champion Rockal Evans leads the nine-boat Comet fleet by a slim three-point margin over nearest rival Stevie Dickinson, of the East End Mini Yacht Club, and American Talbot Ingram of the Shrewsbury Sailing & Yacht Club who are both tied on seven points.

Quinton Simons, of the West End Sail Boat Club, broke his mast in the second race which ruled him out of the third, and it remains to be seen whether he rejoins the fray when racing in the Comets resumes.
