Kempe climbs the rankings in Antigua

Sitting pretty: Sebastian Kempe is ninth position

Sebastian Kempe has climbed into ninth place after a superb day of racing at the Optimist World Championship in Antigua today.

Kempe, who was in eighteenth after the opening two races on Monday, came sixth in the third race before taking victory in the fourth to leave himself on 23 net points.

Further down the standings are Christian Ebbin in eighteenth after strong finishes of sixth and third, and Magnus Ringsted in 86th, who placed 25th and 35th yesterday.

Laura Hopman is in 101st position after finishes of 30th and 23rd, while Nicole Stovell came 39th and 47th is in 178th. A record fleet of 254 sailors from 65 countries are competing at the championship being held on the Caribbean island for the first time. Malta’s Richard Schultheis tops the overall standings of the championship on English Harbour, having won all four races so far.

Kempe, Ebbin and Ringsted are the only survivors from Bermuda’s team that competed at the Optimist World Championship in Cyprus last year while Hupman and Stovell are both making their debuts at this level.

The Optimist World Championship, being hosted by the Antigua Yacht Club, consists of an individual fleet racing and a team racing event, which finishes on July 16.
