Siblings Cecilia and Michael Wollmann said they were encouraged by their strong finish to the Nacra 17 class at the Pan American Games yesterday.

The pair saved their best for last by finishing fifth out of a fleet of 11 in windy conditions in the La Bahía de Paracas at the Yacht Club Peruano.

They placed eighth overall in the mixed multihull with 81 net points and did not reach the medal race.

“We had a fun final race,” said Cecilia, who helmed the boat while Michael served as crew.

“It was windiest day and we did really well. We had really good boat speed and we weren’t crashing out as much as other boats. It seemed really positive.

“We’re not too sure what’s next for us. We’ll go back to Bermuda and then continue with school.

“We’ll see what regattas we’re able to do and which we can get our boat to. That’s another big thing with Nacras as you have to transport your boat everywhere.”

Michael said the conditions on the final race were perfect for pair and that he had hoped for a better overall finish.

“We finished the week doing OK but not as well as we’d hoped to do,” he said. “Sometimes sailing is like that.

“The wind hasn’t always been in our favour but we really liked the wind yesterday. It’s a shame we couldn’t have that all week.”

The Wollmanns switched to the Nacra 17 about 2½ years ago as they bid to qualify for the Olympic Games in Tokyo next summer.

Cecilia is the more seasoned of the pair, having represented Bermuda at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and the previous Pan Am Games in Toronto in 2015.
