Ebbin among top ten at championships

Strong showing: Christian Ebbin (left) and Magnus Ringsted

Christian Ebbin produced an impressive top-ten display at the Optimist North American Championship that concluded in Nassau, Bahamas yesterday.

The Somersfield Academy student finished ninth competing among a fleet of 163 sailors from twenty countries.

Ebbin achieved six top-three finishes in the ten-race series, including two firsts during the qualifying races.

He was the top qualifier for the Gold Fleet and topped the leaderboard heading into yesterday’s final day of racing, but was ultimately denied a spot on the podium.

Still, Ebbin’s showing was a vast improvement from the 21st finish he achieved at last year’s Optimist North American Championship in Riviera Nayarit, Mexico.

Magnus Ringsted and PJ Rodrigues rounded off the top-three local performers in Bahamas.

Ringsted, who also competed in the Gold Fleet, finished 15th with a best showing of third during the qualifying series.

Rodrigues finished 76th overall with a best showing of 15th and was also Bermuda’s top performer in the Silver Fleet.

Rachael Betschart was Bermuda’s top performer among the girls and 79th overall competing in the Silver Fleet. Also competing in the Silver Fleet were Laura Hupman, Ava Adams, Amelia Lewis and Nicole Stovell.

Hupman finished 90th, Adams 101st, Lewis 107th and Stovell 110th.

Kipling Rossouw and Sophia Dias both competed in the Bronze Fleet, finishing 113th and 129th respectively.

Brazilian Gustavo Campos and Alejandra Vega, of Peru, secured the boys and girls titles at this year’s Optimist North American Championship organised by the Nassau Yacht Club and the Bahamas National Sailing School.
