Evans and Smith miss out on Tokyo
Rockal Evans came up short in his objective at the Hempel World Cup Series Miami in Florida last week.
The Bermudian sailor was bidding for the sole qualifying spot in the Finn class on offer to the North American region for the Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer.
However, his qualifying hopes were dashed after Mexico’s Juan Perez Soltero sealed the qualifying position.
Evans finished tenth among the 14-boat Finn class with five top-ten showings, including a best finish of third, in the ten-race series.
Caleb Paine, of the United States, won the gold medal in the Finn class.
Evans was accompanied at the regatta by compatriot Benn Smith, who also missed out on qualifying for the Olympics in the Laser class.
He finished fifteenth in the opening race series among the 40-strong Laser class. He managed two top-ten finishes, including a best of eighth in the third race.
Andrew Lewis, of Trinidad and Tobago, claimed the sole Olympic spot available in the Laser while Stefano Peschiera, of Peru, won the gold medal.
The Hempel Sailing World Cup Series Miami was the final opportunity for North American competitors to qualify for the sailing competition in Tokyo.
