Dragon first across the line on opening leg of Bermuda One-Two
Dragon is the earliest yacht to reach the island on the first leg of the Bermuda One-Two Yacht Race, arriving at the St George’s Dinghy and Sports Club this afternoon.
Of the 23 yachts that departed last Friday from Newport, Rhode Island, under the auspices of the Newport Yacht Club, Dragon, skippered by Michael Hennessy, was the first of the fleet to successfully cross the finish line at an official time of 4.23pm.
Kiwi Spirit II, skippered by Stanley Paris, is second and expected to cross the line and reach St George’s within the next three hours.
As its name of the biennial race portends, the first leg consists of a lone skipper navigating their way to the island and, after a brief layover, being joined by a co-skipper for the double-handed return leg to Newport. This year, an additional boat in Bermuda will be joining the fleet for the second leg.
