Campbell Patton dazzles in Laser class at Atlantic Coast Championships
Campbell Patton beat out 34 rivals, including two other Bermudians, to win the ILCA 7 red fleet at the recent Atlantic Coast Championships in Larchmont, New York.
Patton, who was able to throw out his worst finish — eighth in the second race — had two wins, two thirds and a fifth in the six-race series operating in full-rig Laser dinghies.
Back-to-back victories in the fourth and fifth races proved decisive for Patton, who sealed the title by five points over American pair Ben Sheppard and William DeSimone.
Patton, representing the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, collected 13 points while Sheppard and DeSimone finished on 18 points. Sheppard won the first race and was second in the fourth and sixth races, after finishing thirteenth in the fifth, which he was able to discard.
DeSimone was in contention throughout the series, but victory eluded him amid five top-five finishes, compiling two seconds, a fourth and three fifths.
Benn Smith, the recent winner of the 78th Edward Cross Long Distance Comet Race, placed eighth overall on 45 points after finishes of ninth, fifteenth, third, sixteenth and second before closing with his worst result, eighteenth. He was representing the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club and the Spanish Point Boat Club.
A third Bermudian, Christopher Adderley, of RBYC, was 20th place on 87 points after finishes of 23rd, fifteenth, fourteenth, fifteenth, 26th and 22nd.
