Rockal Evans and his fellow crew aboard Matador continued their winning ways in the Pallas Capital TP52 Gold Cup in New South Wales, Australia, at the weekend.

The series leaders and defending champions were again a model of consistency as they swept all of the class honours up for grabs.

David Doherty’s team won three of the five races, which consisted of three windward/leeward races and two passage races.

The three-day regatta concluded on Sunday with one shortened passage race being held before racing was abandoned due to high winds.

“Day three was super windy with 25 plus knots of wind,” Evans told The Royal Gazette.

“We had two races scheduled but the race committee only decided to do one because the wind was over the wind limit after the first race was complete.

“We won the only race of the day to seal up the victory in survival conditions. It was definitely a race to remember.”

Evans and his fellow crew went into the regatta high on confidence after winning the opening two events of this year’s series, and they thrust themselves into early contention for honours after posting three podium finishes in the opening windward/leeward races, including two firsts.

“Day 1 was light to medium wind. We had 3 great starts on each race and just sailed our own race, picking the wind shifts,” Evans added.

The defending champions got off to a poor start during Saturday’s 24 nautical mile passage race but managed to claw their way back and secure another podium finish among the racing fleet of nine boats.

“We didn’t get the best of starts and was at the back of the fleet early in the race, but we didn’t give up and fought back to third,” Evans said.

Chris Townsend and Matt Donald's Gweilo finished second, seven points behind the winners, with Craig Neil’s Quest taking third a further point adrift.

Doherty’s team also claimed the IRC and ORC titles by three and four points respectively over nearest rival Gweilo to complete an impressive sweep and solidify their lead in the overall series.

The regatta was hosted by Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club and held in conjunction with Sail Port Stephens.
