Campbell Patton and Adriana Penruddocke will represent Bermuda at this summer’s Olympic Test Event in Paris, France.

Patton was chosen over Sebastian Kempe and Benn Smith for the right to carry the island’s banner in the men’s single-handed ILCA 7 class.

The Australia-based sailor will be accompanied by Penruddocke, who is the island’s only competitor with an active programme in the single-handed women’s ILCA 6 class.

The Olympic Test Event is being held at Marseilles Marina, with all racing taking place in Rade Sud de Marseilles from July 7 to 16.

All Olympic classes will be represented at the upcoming regatta with countries permitted one entry per event.

“We congratulate all the sailors for their ongoing and dedicated efforts in the most competitive sailing events in the Olympics,” Tom Clarke, the Bermuda Sailing Association president, told The Royal Gazette.

“The progression of all the sailors and competitiveness between them raises the bar for all of them.”

Patton, Kempe, Smith and Penruddocke have all qualified for the ILCA 7 World Championship and ILCA 6 Women’s World Championship, where they will attempt to secure Bermuda’s spot at next year’s Olympic Games in Paris, France at the first opportunity.

Both events are being held in conjunction with the Sailing World Championship and will take place in The Hague, Netherlands, from August 10 to 20.

Penruddocke has also been confirmed as Bermuda’s representative in the women’s ILCA 6 class for the Pan American Games, with the trio of Patton, Kempe and Smith still battling it out for the right to compete for the island in the men’s ILCA 7 fleet.

“The Pan Am Games spot for the men's single-handed is still to be decided and the competition to get there is still tight between Campbell, Sebastian and Benn,” Clarke said.

“Adriana is the de facto Pan Am representative as she is the only women with an active programme still. Adriana is progressing well and has a solid training plan through to the Pan Am Games and beyond.

“The BSA wishes them all luck in their upcoming events and we look forward to their results keeping Bermuda on the map at these important regattas.”

The Pan American Games will be held in Santiago, Chile, from October 20 to November 5.
