Tom Clarke sends ominous warning to Olympic sailing hopefuls
Tom Clarke has warned the island’s Olympic sailing hopefuls must “pull their socks up” if they are to secure a spot for Bermuda at next year’s Games in Paris.
The Bermuda Sailing Association president’s remarks arrived fresh on the heels of the performances of local pair Campbell Patton and Adriana Penruddocke at the Olympic Test Event that concluded yesterday in Marseilles, France.
Patton placed 35th among the 42-strong men’s dinghy fleet and Penruddocke 31st among the 38 competitors in the women’s dinghy division.
“Certainly we are happy they got to qualify and got to go there,” Clarke told The Royal Gazette. “They are disappointed in their results as are we, too, a little bit.
“It’s at that stage now where they have to start delivering. They’ve got less than 12 months to Olympics and they have to start getting results if they want to qualify the country so we will have a full debrief when they get back.
“These are all the guys they are going to race against at the Olympics if they get there. And we need to be on the same page as them if we want to beat them or at least be with them, so they are going to have to pull up their socks a little bit.
“There’s a couple of good results in there but they just need to be more consistently good.”
Patton, Penruddocke, Sebastian Kempe and Benn Smith are all attempting to represent Bermuda at next year’s Olympics in the International Laser class.
The foursome will have the first attempt to secure Bermuda’s spot at the Paris Games competing at the next month’s ILCA World Championship in The Hague, Netherlands.
“Campbell, Benn, Sebastian and Adriana are all going to the World Championship in August and we hope to see better results there,” Clarke added.
“It is the first qualifier for the Olympics, so that’s going to be more important with a lot more players.”
