Sailors finish in midfield on day three in Chile
Bermuda’s sailors finished in mid-pack in their only race on day three of Ilca class competition in Algarrobo on Tuesday.
Adriana Penruddocke finished eleventh of the 17 competitors in race six of her event, losing further ground in the race for Olympic qualification spots to Mexican Elena Oetling Ramirez, who finished seventh behind Canadian Sarah Douglas.
The young Bermudian is hopeful of securing one of the two North American region spots for the 2024 Olympics available at this regatta but with 43 points she is now eleven behind Mexico and will be looking over her shoulder in an attempt to hold off Charlotte Webster of the Cayman Islands (59pts) through the rest of the regatta.
Campbell Patton also continues to fare well against far more experienced rivals, finishing tenth of 21 in his sixth race of competition in Ilca class 7.
Patton’s ten points leaves him on 44 points but keeps him in contention for a top-ten position. Peruvian Stefano Peschiera remains on top with 11 points.
Both sailors have their work cut out to make it into the top five sailors, who will contest the medals on the final day of competition, but Wednesday could prove crucial, especially to Penruddocke’s Olympic ambitions, with two races scheduled to take place from 1pm.
