Adriana Penruddocke on verge of sealing Olympic qualification
With just two races of the Pan American Games regatta left to go, Adriana Penruddocke is virtually assured of a place at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
With two qualifying places up for grabs at Algarrobo, Penruddocke is 21 points ahead of Cayman’s Charlotte Webster and more or less guaranteed a spot in France next year.
Penruddocke finished ninth and eleventh in her two races on Wednesday to sit tenth in the overall standings on 63 points and after returning to land, she expressed her delight.
“I’m really happy to have pretty much secured the spot,” Penruddocke said.
“I wouldn’t have believed it before the event. I’m just trying to do my best every day and see what happens. I’m really happy to be able to do that and put my best foot forward.
“It’s been super tough but I’m really happy with my overall performance. There has been massive positives from it and to be in the mix with people who have had multiple Olympic experiences is really cool.”
It’s not just Penruddocke who is chasing a country spot for the Paris Olympics with Campbell Patton putting himself back in the race for qualification.
Patton (60pts) is locked in a five-way fight for the second qualification spot with Fillah Karim of Canada (57), Aruba’s Just van Aanholt (59), Luc Chevrier of St Lucia (62) and Chapman Peterson of the United States (65) with just two races to go tomorrow.
The young Bermudian produced his best finish of fourth in the first race of the day on Wednesday and was unfortunate to lose out on another good position when capsizing in race two
“It’s mixed feelings but very happy with the result of the first one and I definitely had a smile on my face when I crossed the line after finally holding it together on both of the downwinds,” Patton said
“That’s what I’ve been struggling with. It was the first race that was definitely a bit lighter this week and I really executed on the start. I knew that would be important and my speed was good throughout the race, and I was also happy with my decision making.
“I was pretty happy and I know the results today will make things close with the North Americans for the Olympic spot. I’m definitely still in the game but I’m not focusing on results and numbers just on executing the next race.
“I want more and I know I can do better. For 90 percent of the races, I’m top-five material. There are just a couple of things that I need to add together and then I’m going to be golden. I just hope I can put it all together for the last day.”
