‘It’s a tall order but it is very achievable’

Bermuda Sailing Association secretary Tom Clarke believes local trio Sebastian Kempe, Campbell Patton and Benn Smith are capable of achieving Olympic qualification at the ILCA 7 Men’s World Championship in Adelaide, Australia.

The promising trio are attempting to secure a spot for Bermuda in the single-handed dinghy at the regatta this week.

“It’s a tall order but it’s very achievable,” Clarke told The Royal Gazette.

“If any one of those individuals has a good event they will get a spot for Bermuda for sure.

“They are within striking distance and they all have the ability. If they get all their dots in a row for the whole event there is a good chance they will get the country a spot.”

At least one of the trio must finish in the top third of the overall fleet to clinch a spot for Bermuda at the next Olympics.

Kempe and Patton warmed up for the regatta in the Oceania and Australian ILCA Open and Youth Championships this month.

Kempe finished runner-up in the under-21 division and 48th among the 102-strong fleet, while Patton finished eighth in the silver fleet and 59th overall.

Smith has been based in Australia for the past two weeks as he prepares to take his shot at qualifying the country for this year’s Olympics in Paris..

Adriana Penruddocke is the only Bermudian sailor to have so far qualified for this summer’s Olympics in the ILCA 6 women’s class.

She secured a spot for the island competing in the Pan American Games in Algarrobo, Chile, last November, and will represent the island at the main event as the only local female involved in an Olympic campaign.
