Sebastian Kempe reignites hopes of Olympic qualification
Sebastian Kempe produced a sparkling couple of performances at the ILCA 7 World Championship in Adelaide on Saturday to ignite Bermuda’s hopes of securing Olympic qualification.
After a disappointing opening day in Australia, when Kempe finished 34th and 28th in the first two races, the young Bermudian kept himself in with a chance of Olympic qualification when finishing sixth and eighteenth respectively in the third and fourth qualifying races.
Those strong efforts propelled Kempe from 96th position to 57th spot and put him on the cusp of qualifying the country for the Olympics, which is guaranteed if a Bermudian finishes in the top third of the 152-strong fleet.
Kempe is the best-placed Bermuda sailor after the first couple of days, with Campbell Patton in 91st position after finishing 27th and 26th in the last two races and Benn Smith in 123rd position after crossing the line in 43rd and 35th position on day two.
There is still more than half of the regatta remaining, with the competition consisting of ten qualifying races, with the top sailors moving on to a medal race.
