Sebastian Kempe still on course to qualify for gold fleet in Spain
Sebastian Kempe remains on course to qualify for the gold fleet despite falling further off the lead at the ILCA Under-21 European Championships in Majorca, Spain.
The Bermudian sailor now sits in 34th among the 137-boat fleet on 71 points after discarding his worst score of 42 with one race remaining in the six-race qualifying series which determines the sailors competing in the gold and silver fleets at the end of the regatta.
The fleet will be divided into two after the sixth race has been completed with the top half advancing to the gold fleet and an opportunity to compete for the medals.
Kempe, 18, made a flying start to his campaign with victory in the first race before a 20-42- 25-25 record in subsequent races resulted in him dropping down the standings.
The championships has been plagued by light and shifty breezes, which has already resulted in delays, a general recall and postponements that has frustrated competitors and organisers alike.
The race committee had hoped to complete the six race qualifying series on Wednesday after getting in only one race the previous day as they were unable o complete two under the prevailing conditions.
German Ole Schweckendiek tops the standings through five races by 12 points over Lorenzo Mayer of France, with Norway’s Theodor Middelthon a point back in third.
The Reial Club Nàutic Port de Pollençare are hosting the championships, with 202 sailors representing 36 nations, including 28 from Europe.
Kempe, who was crowned Junior Male Athlete of the Year for the third straight year at this month’s National Sports Awards ceremony, is using this week’s regatta as a warm-up for his final attempt at qualification for the Olympics at the Last Chance Regatta in Hyères, France, next month.
