Struggling Colts bank on experience

Devonshire Colts coach Kieshon Smith believes his side can draw on past experience as they look to get off the bottom of the table with a win over St. David's at Lords tomorrow.

The two clubs are set to do battle with both currently in the bottom three of the standings and needing maximum points to kick start their campaign.

For Smith, it would be a welcome three points given the clubs have been familiar foes in recent seasons, with Colts beating the Islanders to retain their top flight status.

"We have been here before and can use the experience from the past to get through this," said Smith.

"The only good thing I can say is that we are playing well, so we don't have too many people holding their heads down right now.

"It is just a matter of getting the right result and moving forward.

"We are scoring and that is the Achilles heel of any team, and the main point of the game is to score so we are ok in that sense.

"Against Rangers we didn't take our chances and if you don't take what is given to you, you will lose everytime."

The last encounter between the two sides was at the end of the 2008/09 season when they played a two-legged tie with the winner confirming their top-flight status at the expense of the loser.

Smith acknowledged that his side can take something from that match but also must not be complacent given the importance of the game.

"The last time we played St. David's it was top flight survival so this would give us a little bit of confidence knowing we have been to battle with them before and come out on top.

"But we won't take them for granted, we will stick to our guns and everything should be alright.

"They have Jack Castle as coach and that gives them a lot of experience in the coaching department, so it will be a very interesting match and a win for us puts us in the right direction, and there is a lot of football still left to be played.

"We have a game in hand and it could be a bonus if we can get the result tomorrow to get ourselves out of any predicament at the bottom of the table.

"But we must put ourselves in a position to utilise the extra match to our advantage."

North Village and Devonshire Cougars don't have any time to rest after their Dudley Eve final classic with both sides looking to gain three points this weekend.

The Rams will travel to BAA Field to play Boulevard while Cougars head west to tackle Somerset Eagles at White Hill Field.

St. George's are also on the road as they head to St. John's Field to face champions Dandy Town, with the day's other match will pit tenants PHC against landlords Southampton Rangers.
