Brangman blunder hands Village win

North Village midfielder Thomas Watson (left) brings the ball under control as Moses Steede (centre) and Ralph Bean watch on. Village beat Devonshire Cougars 1-0 at Devonshire Rec. yesterday.

Devonshire Cougars 0North Village 1Ricardo Brangman may just have handed North Village the Premier Division title. The Devonshire Cougars goalkeeper’s blunder gifted Village the only goal of the game and kept their championship challenge on track.Brangman miscued an attempted goal-kick straight to Rams striker Ralph Bean Jr, who wasn’t about to look that sort of gifthorse in the mouth.Needless to say, Village skipper Sammy DeGraff was delighted his side caught a break in a game that had threatened to get bogged down in midfield.“It was a hard fought game, both sides worked hard and it is us who came out on top when we need to grind out results like this,” said DeGraff.“It went back and forth, the pitch was bumpy so it didn’t really allow either team to settle down and play some good football, but we took the chance that mattered and that is what counts.“We had a few chances to get more goals that I felt we could have taken but mainly to get wins in games like this is the most important thing.“I didn’t the see the goal as I was on the bench at the time, but Ricardo kicked it right to Ralph who made no mistake.“We will take goals which ever way they come, there are five games left, so we are closer to our goal of getting the league title and today was a big game.“I don’t care how we got the win but we got it and I’m happy for that.”In a match that saw chances at either end at a premium, it was the mistake of Brangman that cost Cougars from getting anything out of the game, although they never really looked their menacing selves for the duration of the match. The first real chance went the way of Village in the 35th, who had midfielder Kaiwon Dill left unmarked in the Cougars area, but he hit his effort straight at Brangman. It was then the heroics of Kijuan Franks one minute later that kept the scores level when he cleared a Bean jr. shot that was destined for the back of the net off the line, injuring himself in the process, although he would be able to continue shortly after. The telling blow was struck in the 40th when Brangman’s goal kick fell to the feet of Bean 30 yards away from goal.Bean still had work to do and can thank Brangman for the goal, with the shot stopper starting to his left before diving back across goal only to have the ball go underneath him.The Big Cats seemed out of sorts as they match went on, but were almost given a lifeline when Village ‘keeper Jason Williams arrogance allowed a long range shot from winger Lejuan Simmons go over his head.Williams nonchalance was evident as he didn’t look back to see where the effort was going, with the shot hitting the crossbar before ending out of bounds.Jason Lee almost doubled the visitor’s lead when we latched onto a cut back inside the Cougars area, only to see his shot skim the crossbar before going out of play.Cougars tried to find a way back into the match by introducing Mark Smith and Mark Steede into the attack, but typical of their play throughout the match, couldn’t find the telling ball when in good positions, wasting many of the chances they had.Devonshire Cougars: R Brangman, T White, K Franks, J Butterfield, C Caisey, J Seymour, L Simmons (M Steede, 80), T Steede, M Steede, J Smith (M Smith, 67), D Daniels (K Tucker, 45)North Village: J Williams, T Manders, S Fubler, K Dill, D Tankard, J Boyles, T Watson (V Tankard, 68), K Dill (S DeGraff, 45), R Bean, P Smith (J Jennings, 68), J LeeGoals: Bean,40Subs not used: K Arruda, J Sousa, T BurgessYellow cards: J JenningsReferee: E HolmesMan of the Match: R Bean (Village)Dandy Town 5Somerset Eagles 1A hat-trick from Raymond Beach and goals from Jamel Swan and Tristan Daniels gave Dandy Town an emphatic win over Somerset Eagles at White Hill Field yesterday.Midfielder Troy Tucker scored for Eagles.
