Blazers vow to support jailed striker

Boulevard captain Temiko Wilson was imprisoned for six months last week.

Boulevard have vowed to stand by jailed skipper Temiko Wilson and help him turn his life around when he is released.Wilson, 23, was handed a six month sentence last week for holding a “drugs party” at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess. He was found guilty of six charges related to last April's drugs bust, including possessing cannabis and cocaine with intent to supplyThe young striker had been leading the Premier Division goalscoring charts with 12 goals, and while club president Lou Matthews said the club could not condone Wilson's actions he is adamant they will do all they can to help him.“It's disappointing for Temiko and the team. Temiko was really coming into his own this season and showing good leadership on the field,” said Matthews.“He was playing very well for us but he made some bad decisions which have now affected his life.“When he comes out we will offer him the proper support he needs and help him fast-forward his life.“His involvement in football does help him and we will sit down with him when he is released and help him set some better goals for his life.”Matthews, who was voted in for his second stint as Blazers president last November, said Boulevard were committed to helping those players with off-field problems and wants football to be a medium to improve the lives of young males in the community.The club recently teamed up with community action group Rise Above Bermuda who have agreed to sponsor the Pembroke-based side.“We're trying to set goals for our players and are committed to supporting them,” said Matthews. “We want to promote positive living, safety and leadership. It's not just about the football side of things, there's a lot more we can do in the community.”Last week also saw another Boulevard player K'wonde Lathan hauled in front of the court. The 20-year-old defender, who is alleged to be affiliated with the Park Side gang, was charged with conspiring to obstruct justice. Lathan, who denies the charge, was refused bail and will remain in custody until his trial on May 2.
