Village veterans out to prove class is permanent

North Village have enjoyed an encouraging debut in the Corona League with the side currently sitting in third place in the league as the season hits the –final straight. The experienced team boasts a wealth of seasoned veterans including local legends Shaun Goater, Kyle Lightbourne, Elliott Jennings, Dwayne Adams, Dwayne Leverock, Kevin Jennings, Nakia Smith, Mark Trott, and Damon Wade to name just a few.Considering the talent at coach Arnell Thomas’ disposal it is no surprise Village are in third place in the league, 15 points adrift of leaders Vasco and behind second place BAA on goal difference.Thomas is more than satisfied with the team’s inaugural Corona League campaign having switched from the Bermuda Football Association’s Master’s League which they won last year. He said: “Last year we received a consensus from majority of the players that played in the Master’s League that they wanted to play in the Corona League because it was more competitive than playing in the Master’s,” said Thomas. “The president and executives supported the players to make that switch but we needed the commitment and to reinforce our internal structure if we wanted to play in the Corona League, which we did.“The players said they just wanted to have fun but if in the position to win the league than let’s win the league.“I know deep down that this league was very competitive and the players are going to want to compete. Players did pre-season training and we have a scrimmage once a-week.“I always stated that I wanted to be in the top four for the first year and do better the next.“For our first season we can’t complain too much because overall for a much older team we are holding our own against these young talented players that we come up against. We bring a wealth of skills and movement of the ball.“I wish the league leaders were a lot closer in all honesty, but I can congratulate Vasco for winning the league and we hope to do better the next time we meet.”The Corona League’s family atmosphere suits Village’s players many of whom bring their family and friends to enjoy the matchday atmosphere at BAA Field, Thomas said.“It’s nice to watch all the other teams play either before your match or after your match. As a coach you get to look at other team’s strengths and weakness at one venue.“We were in the Master’s League last year and it was a joke, you had about two teams that showed any real interest as we did and won the league without losing a game. Some teams couldn’t even field a team or no referees showed up.“I thought the Corona League would be a perfect fit for the skills, talent, and experience we had. We enjoy the league very much with its professional approach by the Corona League organisers, referees, spectators and BAA bartenders.Thomas has 48 players in his squad and admits he has experienced a few selection headaches this term.“As the gaffer I have headaches in trying to select a team because with all the talent that we have it is hard to leave any of them out. I would like to apologise now for not naming my whole 48 registered players. If I picked a team from my roster and if everyone was available we would be unstoppable.”
