Fox: No one expects us to beat Cougars

St. George’s Colts assistant coach Kameron Fox believes the pressure will be on Devonshire Cougars when the two sides lock horns tomorrow night in the Friendship semi-final.The two clubs have played each other four times already this year, with both winning a game and the other two matches ending in draws.Cougars prevailed in the latest battle, a titanic FA Cup semi-final triumph that went to a replay and extra time, something that Fox believes is a real possibility this time around.“We gave a few players that haven’t featured that much this term a run out (this weekend) and that allowed us to save a few of our key players and give them extra time to rest and relax for the upcoming game against Cougars,” said Fox.“If the game goes overtime, and knowing the past matches between the two teams it could be just that so we need to make sure we are ready to go the distance.“It is a good challenge for us, Cougars have beaten us, we have beaten them and the onus is more on them than us.“If they beat us then they were supposed to go through but if we win it is an upset.”Colts came from behind three times in the FA Cup clash before Tumani Steede’s late strike denied them at the death.Being in all major competitions right until the end has been something that is new to the club, although Fox insists that this factor will have no bearing on the result on tomorrow night’s game. While players have been –rested as they prepare for the chance to play at the National Sports Centre, the coaching staff will work tirelessly to concoct a recipe for success.Knowing each other well enough to know what to expect, Fox knows it will be a stiff task to beating Cougars, but one he is happy to take on.“Us being in these competitions is a thing of fatigue with us really,” said Fox.“We have put in a lot of work throughout the season and now with the season winding down, we don’t want to over exert themselves, and with us being in a safety zone the players are laid back.“We don’t want to push them to the point that they don’t want to play anymore, we have given them some light stuff and hopefully they will click back in.“The players have the talent and we knew it would always be a chance that we could beat teams and our motto was –‘not everyone will take three points off us’, and we have stuck to this.“Everyone was enthusiastic and ready to go so I don’t think this will be any different.“The teams are familiar with each other, we will look to defend as a team and try to catch them on the counter.“If we can do this then we should be ok, but they have key players that they rely on and we have to be wary of the potential they have.“Hopefully the game plan we draw up is good enough to win, but if they score first then it will be a shoot out, whoever scores the most will win.”Also tomorrow night, BAA take on Hamilton Parish in the Shield semi-final.Both games will be played at Somerset Cricket Club, with the Shield game at 7pm, and St George’s Friendship Trophy clash with Devonshire Cougars due to start at 9pm.
