Village players stunned as team-mate is gunned down
North Village’s title winning celebrations have turned into mourning following the death of their young midfielder Randy Robinson. The newly crowned Premier Division champions have been left in complete shock and are struggling to come to terms with the fatal shooting of their popular team-mate, the club’s captain Sammy DeGraff said yesterday. He described the 22-year-old’s death as a terrible tragedy as he declared his deepest sympathies and condolences to the family of the ex-Devonshire Cougars player.Robinson was among the players rejoicing in Village’s title victory at Police Field last Sunday, although DeGraff admits that triumph now paled into insignificance.“The Village squad is in complete shock and our prayers go out to Randy’s family. When I got the call last night I went hospital to give my support. Randy’s mom was just too distressed to even speak to and I think his dad hasn’t come to terms with it yet,” said DeGraff.“I think the Village players will be meeting up either tonight or tomorrow none of us can quite believe Randy has gone.“It’s such a terrible tragedy, one minute you’re playing football together and the next minute ... words can’t really describe it. The title win really pales into insignificance now.”DeGraff fondly remembers Robinson as the life and soul of the dressing room and said his bubbly nature made him a fun team-mate to be around.“He was a very lively person. He was always talking trash to you in training and challenging you in a good way,” said DeGraff, who played alongside Robinson in midfield.“Even if you weren’t in a good mood he would make training fun and was always joking around. I’m really going to miss that side of him.”Robinson, the son of former Village player Randy Spence, was shot dead in North Pembroke on Thursday night and DeGraff said he hoped the Island community would sit up and take notice of the latest tragedy.“Right now there are some different things happening in our country ... I never thought I would receive that call last night. A lot of the guys didn’t believe it when they were told ‘Randy’s dead’. There are a lot of Randy’s in Bermuda; we just couldn’t believe it was our Randy we just thought ‘no way’.“It seems like you never know when it’s your time these days. You just have to trust in God.”Despite not being a hundred percent fit, Robinson was a regular in Shaun Goater’s Village team this campaign and DeGraff is adamant there was much more to come from the talented youngster.“He came up through Village’s ranks and then went to Cougars,” he said. “I’m a bit older than Randy so I didn’t play alongside him as a youth. He came back to Village at the start of the season and was playing despite not being fully recovered from a knee injury. I think we would have seen a different Randy next season. It’s nice he was part of this season’s title victory but very sad that he will no longer be around.”
