Vasco boss hails team after completing undefeated season
Vasco vice-president Miguel Pereira is full of praise for his undefeated side who won the club’s first Corona League title. They were presented with the trophy on Saturday at BAA Field. While the league may have been wrapped up weeks ago, with the lead at the top some 21 points, Vasco continued to put out their best line-up in an attempt to become the first team in the league’s history to go a full season without losing. For Pereira, it was a job well done from both the players and the coaching staff.“It feels great to win the league, the team are pleased as is the club,” said Pereira. “The goal was to win the league and once we realised we could get it we wanted to make a real effort to go and try and get through the whole season undefeated.“It’s not easy to win every game and we just wanted to take it game by game and get three points from each match.“I believe that this year with the coaching that we had, it brought confidence to the side and we were grateful to have former Boulevard coach John Rebello and Joe Barbosa to help out with the team.“The whole support from the whole club towards John and Joe was great and in return it was laid down to the players who produced the results.”Vasco boasted a wealth of experience with the likes of Marvin Belboda, Sheridan Ming, Quincy Aberdeen, Troy Hall and Otis Steede, to go along with Rui Furtado, Rich Holden and Kennedy Wainwright. The side had a fairly easy time of things during the season, scoring well over 100 goals while letting in less than 30 in 22 league matches, a goal difference that no other team came remotely close to.During Vasco’s unbeaten run, only Tuff Dogs managed to get something out of their game, a 1-1 draw, while St. David’s felt the full brunt of what the club were capable of, thrashed 18-2.The humiliation of the Islanders was followed up with a 16-0 hammering of Fire FC, a game that saw striker Furtado hit the net a record nine times. They did, however, suffer a defeat on penalties in the Bistro Cup semi-final to Lock ‘N’ Key. But Pereira said he wasn’t too concerned about that loss.“The loss in the cup wasn’t a big thing to us, we were already deep into the season and wanted the undefeated (league) campaign and once we realised that we could win the league with the points we had, we focused on the double which didn’t happen because of our loss to Lock ‘N’ Key.“We had a lot of our players from last year return and with the new guys we brought in our level went higher in terms of playing ability and skill.“The players that were already at the club last season, with the new guys, looked better than in previous years and that comes down to the coaching, preparation, and mentality of each player going into the games.Looking towards next season, the boss said he was adamant that his side had what it took to successfully defend their crown.“Each team heads into the season wanting to win the league, especially the top teams who are looking for that, I don’t think we were much different from anybody else, we were just organised, played each game on its merit and didn’t worry about other results and the talk around the league, we focused on ourselves.“To defend a title is harder than winning it the first time. I think the quality of players we have is sufficient. Of course, we will always welcome new guys in because some players decide to play for other teams or retire.“Our group will be the same and we would promote bringing in Portuguese players to join our club. But also other players from different backgrounds are more than welcome to come out and play for us.“We have a good mix of players of different nationalities and would like to continue this for years to come.”
