Tears and joy: The parents of the late Randy Robinson, Randy Spence and Roydelle Robinson, join with North Village in celebrating the team's Friendship Trophy win at the National Sports Centre yesterday. Mr Robinson, a North Village player, was murdered on March 31. Both Village, who won 3-1, and opponents Devonshire Cougars, for whom Mr Robinson had also played, wore black armbands in memory of the father-of-one.

North Village 3Devonshire Cougars 1A frantic finish saw North Village defend their Friendship Trophy title with Ralph Bean hitting two late goals against Devonshire Cougars at the National Sports Centre yesterday.Bean struck in the 77th and 86th minute to settle matters after Tyrell Burgess scored the opener for the Premier Division champions in the 30th.Kwame Steede scored Cougars' goal in the 81st minute. In a touching gesture, Village dedicated the win to former team-mate Randy Robinson who was killed last week. Both Robinson's parents watched the game from the stands.Village captain Sammy DeGraff believed the final was closer than the scoreline suggested.“It was an even game for the most part, it really came down to the side who finished their chances,” said DeGraff. “We took our chances when they mattered and I have to admit it was a stalemate for most parts of the game.“We have had the upperhand on Cougars this year, so we knew this one could go their way. This is a great way to finish off our campaign, we finished on a high, everything we have been through this weekend. We wanted to win this one for Randy as well.”The match started off brightly for Cougars, who found the back of the net in the opening three minutes through Tumani Steede only to see the linesman raise his flag for offside. It was Village's Burgess who drew first blood though, with his shot deflecting off defender Kijuan Franks and past Ricardo Brangman in goal.Cougars improved after the break with player-coach Kwame Steede beginning to pull their strings in midfield, although their attacking options were limited going forward.Tumani Steede had a gilt-edged chance to level matters 15 minutes into the second half but hit his effort wide, while Village keeper Jason Williams almost gifted Cougars a way back into the match when he spilled a cross. Luckily for him no one was around to tap home from close range.Village striker Jason Lee then missed an open net when he out paced the Big Cats defence but pushed his chipped effort wide of the mark with Brangman advancing off his line.It was then Bean's turn to steal the spotlight when he was the recipient of some slack defending that saw a loose ball cleared to him, and he made no mistake with his left footed effort in the 77th to put his side up two.Kwame Steede pulled a goal back for his side in the 81st minute to set up a nervy ending for both sets of fans, but Bean stepped up again in the 86th to settle matters for the Bernard Park side. Village's 16-year-old sub Jahquan DeShields certainly made an impact when he replaced Jason Lee and played a part in both Bean's goals. At the final whistle, chants of “We love you Randy, we do” echoed though the NSC as fans and players alike joined in on the celebrations, with Robinson's parents holding aloft the Friendship Trophy.DeGraff added: “We knew it was going to be an uphill battle. With them scoring their goal to bring them back in the game we knew it would be a tough fight to the end.“2-0 is a tricky scoreline, it's a scoreline that if the other side scores they naturally have the momentum in their favour, I thought they got the momentum and were very dangerous, but our third really put the game to bed.“The last time we were in a situation like this, we were down to Cougars and we got our goal and managed to win the game, so it goes to show that anything can happen and I'm glad that we were able to keep our composure and win the game.”North Village: J Williams, S. My hat goes off to them as well as the entire team for their effort.Dandy Town 5Somerset Trojans 1Dashun Butterfield scored a brace as Dandy Town won the PDL Knock Out final over Somerset Trojans at the National Sports Centre (NSC) yesterday.Skipper Seion Darrell opened the scoring, while Hubert Butterfield and Tre Manders also got in on the scoring act.Jahi Simmons scored Trojans goal in a losing effort.
