Russell ready for Hogges challenge
PHC striker Antwan Russell is set to make a return to the Bermuda Hogges squad this summer after missing last term because of injury.Russell, 24, has been training with Maurice Lowe’s team for the past few weeks and believes he will be firing on all cylinders by the time their opening game against Reading United on May 27 comes around. For the former Chicago Fire and Baltimore Blast trialist, it’s another chance to prove himself at the higher level following a mixed campaign with the Hogges during their 2009 season in the former USL-D2.“We’re looking to improve on last season’s performances and position in the standings,” said the Bermuda international.“We have a bunch of good players so it’s up to us to do the job. They welcomed me back, a decision I’m happy with, so I’m ready to start the season and get on with things.“I don’t have any real expectations for the season personally, I want to help the younger guys coming through and show them how to better themselves, but if there was an expectation I would have to say to finish higher than last year.”Several seasoned national team players have been training with the Hogges in the build up to the new season, including ex-skipper Kwame Steede, Domico Coddington and Lashun Dill. There’s also been a change in the coaching department with BAA Wanderers boss Maurice Lowe replacing Scott Morton as the head coach.Russell is adamant they will be competitive than last term which saw them finish bottom of the Mid Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference.“We’re training hard in preparation for the season, there’s a lot of talent in the team and a lot of the players I’ve played with before so it should be a good season for us,” Russell added.“It’s always pressure when you play for your country and the Hogges are basically our national team so we have to go out and get results and find some sort of consistency.”Earlier this month Hogges co-owner Paul Scope warned the franchise could disband at the end of the season unless they attracted more sponsorship, but Russell said the players weren’t concerned with what was happening off the pitch.“We aren’t concerned with what’s going on in terms of the finances and so forth, we’re the players and our job is on the field so we will let the backroom staff handle those matters,” he said.Hogges’ first game of the PDL season is against Reading United at BAA Field on Friday, May 27.
