Khano open to Hogges call up

Khano Smith has not ruled out playing for the Bermuda Hogges this season with the former MLS professional understood to be on coach Maurice Lowe’s wanted list. The 30-year-old is currently embroiled in a contract dispute with his new side Carolina RailHawks and insists he will not turn out for them this campaign.Although Smith and the Hogges haven’t yet held talks, he said he would consider joining the squad which will become the de facto national team this summer in preparation for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.“No one has made contact with me in regards to playing with the Hogges,” Smith told The Royal Gazette.“It would be something I’d have to talk to them about before saying yes or no to playing.“I’m trying to sort myself out right now in terms of a coaching business out here but I’m not against it.“It would be nice but I can’t really comment any further until I speak to them directly.”Smith, who was released by New England Revolution last season, is putting the wheels in motion to start a coaching business in the US as he prepares for life after football. But he insists he intends to be part of the Bermuda national team for the World Cup qualifiers which could start as early as October and next year’s Caribbean Digicel Cup.“I’ve spoken to Devarr Boyles (BFA youth director) and he said he still wanted me to be involved in the national programme so who knows what can possibly happen in the future,” said Smith. “I haven’t considered playing with them before because I was playing at a higher level for a professional team, so if I was to live home I would consider it since it is the highest level you can play at. I’m a green card holder right now so I don’t see myself coming home to live anytime soon, but if I did I would certainly consider (the Hogges).”Former Dandy Town winger joined RailHawks as a free agent two months ago but now looks set to leave the North American Soccer League (NASL) side without playing a game for them.He added: “The paperwork has been sent to the league commissioner for him to look at it and make a ruling so that’s as far as it is now, but I can’t say too much more on that.”Smith had been hoping to rejuvenate his career at RailHawks having been without a side since being let go by the Revolution last season following an inconsistent 2009-2010 campaign.Hogges’ first game of the Premier Development League (PDL) campaign is against Reading United at BAA Field on Friday, May 27.n Last week it was revealed that Bermuda Hogges co-owner Shaun Goater had severed ties with the team.Goater has informed league officials of his decision and is currently in the process of legally detaching himself from the Hogges.
