Toothless Hogges pay for poor finishing
Errors in both boxes proved to be Bermuda Hogges' downfall as they slipped to their second successive defeat of the season at the hands of New Jersey Rangers. It's often said that games are won and lost in midfield but that wasn't the case at BAA Field yesterday, where sloppy mistakes and bad decisions at both ends of the pitch were the difference between the sides.Displaying the kind of ruthless edge Hogges are lacking, Rangers were presented with a pair of goalscoring chances in the opening stanza and punished their opponents by scoring both.Hogges, on the other hand, were in a more benevolent mood in front of goal, spurning a trio of gilt-edge opportunities after the break with skipper Keishen Bean the guilty culprit.Bean's first chance, midway through the second half was arguably the flashpoint of the game; had he scored then whole complexion of the encounter would have altered.Instead his looping header from Domico Coddington's chipped cross struck the crossbar and bounced to safety much to the relief of the smattering of Rangers supporters who had made the trip from New Jersey.Moments later Bean was through on goal again, this time courtesy of Kwame Steede's threaded pass but was unable to supply the required finish with Rangers goalkeeper Grant Schonberg smothering the danger.Bean had yet another chance to haul Hogges back into the game and make amends for those earlier misses but fluffed his lines for the third time. With only the keeper to beat, Bean delayed pulling the trigger for far too long, thus narrowing his angle on goal, and eventually dragged his effort just wide of the right hand post.In Bean's defence, he seems more dangerous providing the link between midfield and attack than he does when occupying the lone striker's role, where he was asked to play in the second half. But with Coddington largely ineffectual in that position during the first period, and with Antwan Russell suspended after being sent off in Friday's 3-2 defeat to Reading United, Bean is one of coach Maurice Lowe's only other options.Neither side created much during a cagey first period although the visitors still managed to enter the interval with a comfortable two-goal cushion, having been gifted a pair of goals by the hosts. The first saw Rangers striker Kevin Zalewski latch onto a through ball, breaching Hogges' flimsy offside trap before smashing the ball past Tahj Bell, who was preferred to Timmy Figureido in goal.Hogges were then punished for failing to clear their defensive lines with a loose ball pin-balling around the edge of the area before falling invitingly for Lawrence Geraghty, whose first-time strike nestled into the bottom corner. After the interval Hogges continued to enjoy plenty of possession and although most of it was in ineffectual areas, they did succeed in opening up the visitors on three separate occasions but to no avail, leaving Lowe wondering what might have been.“It was definitely frustrating,” said Lowe. “We made some bad decisions and some sloppy mistakes and at this level you will be punished. The main thing we can take from this is that we created three good scoring chances in the second half. If one of those had gone in it would have changed the whole complexion of the game.”Finding solace in defeat is often the default mode of the loser, and Lowe admitted that was a trait Bermudian football has become too intimate with in recent years.“We're trying to change the culture of Bermudian football. We seem to always get close enough to come up short. We need to become a winning club and I know we have the ability to do so.”
