Hogges looking for Khano’s leadership

Bermuda Hogges are hoping former MLS star Khano Smith will be available for the remainder of the season after making his debut for them earlier this week.Boston-based Smith made the short trip to New York on Tuesday to make a surprise start in Hogges’ final match of their road trip against top-of-the-table Long Island Rough Riders.Although the ex-New England Revolution winger couldn’t prevent Hogges from slipping to a 4-1 defeat, their head coach Maurice Lowe said the 30-year-old led by example, both on and off the pitch.Lowe is now looking for Smith to become a regular starter for struggling Hogges, who are using this season to prepare the Island’s national team players for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.“I think Khano’s impact was huge, both on and off the field, with his professionalism and the example he set for the other players,” said Lowe.“When they see Khano doing the right things it gives them no excuse not to do the same. The BFA’s Ian Rawlins and Vance Brown worked tirelessly over the weekend sorting out the paperwork so Khano could play. There’s a strong possibility he could feature for us some more if the fixtures allow for it.”Since being released by the Revolution at the end of last season, Smith has been taking his first steps on the coaching ladder with New Hampshire Cobras Soccer Club. The Cobras, a partner of the Revolution, held youth player tryouts earlier this month which the Bermuda international attended as a guest coach.Smith’s new side, Hogges, picked up just one point from their recent four-game away trip, although Lowe insists it’s only a matter of time before they record their first win of the campaign.“There were positive signs to take from the trip,” he said.“We’re working towards that first victory and believe more will follow after that. We’ve not had the results we’ve wanted so far, but we’re getting closer to them.” Lowe believes Hogges’ gruelling schedule of four games in the space of a week finally took its toll on the players by the end of the trip.He said: “(The schedule) had a role definitely, but our physio Craig Brown did a great job with the players in both their preparation and recovery.“Towards the end of the week we had one or two injuries and that makes a huge difference with a squad of our size. We lost Domico Coddington and Troy Tucker for the last two matches, but the team was still able to acquit themselves well physically.”The Hogges are next in action against Westchester Flames at BAA Field on Saturday, June 25. Kick off is at 7pm.
