Nusum pep talk inspires the Hogges

Hogges skipper Keishen Bean has revealed a post-training pep talk from national team stalwart John Barry Nusum inspired the team to their first victory of the season. The Islanders halted their seven-game winless streak with a 2-1 home win over Westchester Flames last weekend and go in search of their maiden away victory tomorrow when they face New Jersey Rangers.Nusum, Bermuda’s top goalscorer in World Cup football, delivered a few home truths to the players after the team’s final training session before the Flames match. The big striker, who is considering making an international comeback after recovering from a long-term knee injury, has been training with the Hogges to maintain his fitness over the past month.Nusum led the line for Hogges in the USL-Division Two in 2008 before signing for Crystal Palace Baltimore the following summer. He now coaches First Division side Wolves.Bean, who scored Hogges’ opener against the Flames, said Nusum’s words of wisdom had the desired impact on the Hogges players. “The win was a huge boost, we have struggled for a win although we have had some very good performances,” said Bean.“John Barry Nusum came training last week and he told us that losing becomes a habit and the guys really responded to that.”Also included in Hogges’ 18-man squad for their away trip is former MLS winger Khano Smith and BAA Wanderers youngsters Willie Clemons and Jalen Harvey. And Bean is confident they can build on their recent win and climb their way up the Mid Atlantic Division table.“The away trip will be important because the table is so tight that two wins could put us in a play-off spot, which was our aim at the beginning of the season,” he said.“At the half-way stage I’m confident. We have played each team and there’s only one team that I can say outclassed us.“The rest of the games were close. We seem to be more fluent in attack at home but we need to carry that confidence into the away games.”Hogges have taken five points from eight games this campaign.Hogges’ squad: Tahj Bell, Marquel Waldron, Roger Lee, Damon Ming, Mikkail Crockwell, Daniel Andrade, Reiko Trott, Lashun Dill, Casey Castle, Shakir Smith, Zeiko Lewis, Jalen Harvey, Seion Darrell, Darius Cox, Keishen Bean, Kwame Steede, Willie Clemons, Khano Smith Head coach: Maurice Lowe Assistant coach: Gary DarrellBermuda Hogges away fixturesNew Jersey Rangers tomorrowOcean City FC Sunday, July 3Central Jersey Wednesday, July 6Reading United Friday, July 8
