Hogges lose despite Bean’s brace

Bermuda Hogges' skipper Keishen Bean (left) stretches for the ball during last night's game against Long Island Rough Riders at BAA Field. Hogges lost 4-2.

Bermuda Hogges 2Long Island Rough Riders 4Keishen Bean struck twice in a losing effort for Bermuda Hogges who were defeated by high-flying Long Island Rough Riders at BAA Field last night.Defensive lapses characterised Hogges’ display and despite showing plenty of attacking brio, particular in the second half, they left themselves with too much to do having conceded cheap goals at critical moments of the match.“We didn’t defend well tonight,” said Hogges’ coach Maurice Lowe.“There was some bad marking, silly mistakes and we conceded some soft goals at important times. The fourth goal made life very difficult for us, although I thought we showed plenty of character and spirit in the second half.”Hogges’ captain Bean had given his side the perfect start on 21 minutes with a smart finish at the far post from Zeiko Lewis’ left wing cross. Lewis had found space down the left flank after being released by Seion Darrell and struck a low, hard inviting ball into the path of the onrushing Bean who made no mistake from close range.Hogges’ frustrating habit of conceding moments after scoring once again reared its ugly head, however, with the visitors drawing level two minutes later through Keith Detelj. The Rough Riders striker was first to react after Hogges goalkeeper Tahj Bell parried Ben Arikan’s strike from the edge of the area, with Detelj diverting the ball into the net with an acrobatic volley.By now the visitors’ tails were up and it was no surprise when they pulled ahead ten minutes later following more lackadaisical defending by Hogges. Arikan, the Rough Riders winger, was afforded far too much space and time by a generous Hogges backline and was able to pick his spot from the edge of the box.On the stroke of half-time Hogges’ defenders then repeated their act of failing to close down danger on the edge of the area, allowing midfielder Adriano Gabriele to fire home a third.Despite having a proverbial mountain climb, Hogges started the second half brightly with Lashun Dill forcing a save from the efficient Alex Naples, and Bean hitting the side netting when he probably should have found the target. But just as the hosts were working up a steam they conceded again, this time from a set piece, with big defender Tom Wharf scrambling home after Hogges failed to clear their lines.Although Rough Riders’ lead seemed unassailable, still Hogges pushed forward and had their just rewards when Bean added his second after latching onto a delicate chipped pass from Darrell. Somewhat controversially, Hogges then had a goal disallowed with around ten minutes remaining when substitute Antwan Russell appeared to have beaten the offside trap.Although no flag was raised by referee’s assistant Anthony Francis before Russell stroked the ball home, referee Don Dellavia adjudged the striker to have been offside much to the frustration of Hogges’ players and coaches. On the referee’s contentious decision, Lowe said: “It seems whenever there’s been a close call this season the decision hasn’t gone our way; it does become frustrating.”In the dying stages Russell again almost etched his name on the score sheet, but saw his brave header from a right wing centre hacked off the line by covering defender Gary Flood.Hogges are back in action tomorrow against Brooklyn Knights at BAA Field.
