Khano boosts Hogges push for mid-table respectability

Former Major League Soccer winger Khano Smith is set to make his home debut for Bermuda Hogges against Central Jersey on Thursday.Smith, who played in Hogges’ away defeat against Long Island last month, is also likely to play in Hogges’ final match of the season against New Jersey Express at the weekend.Hogges co-owner Paul Scope said he appreciated Boston-based Smith making himself available for Hogges, who are looking to end their encouraging campaign on a high note.“I’m very appreciative to Khano for turning out for Hogges this season,” he said. “It’s a credit to his character that he’s prepared to play for us having played at a higher level.“It’s good for the younger boys to play alongside someone like Khano. I saw him play against Long Island and even though it was a heavy defeat, you could tell he had played at a good standard.“It will be fun to see him play in Bermuda this week and I’d like the local fans to think about coming out. I know we have some bad weather coming our way but I‘m still hoping of a good crowd.”Since being released by New England Revolution at the end of last season, Smith has been taking his first steps on the coaching ladder with New Hampshire Cobras Soccer Club. But, should the 30-year-old decide to make a playing return, Scope said non-league outfit Newport County could be interested in taking a look at the Bermuda international.Anthony Hudson, a long-time friend of Scope, manages County where out of contract Reggie Lambe was recently on trial. It’s understood Hudson is also keen to run the rule over Domico Coddington, who is currently injured, and trialist Nahki Wells should Bradford City decide not to sign him.“I know Anthony would be interested in Khano if he ever wanted to go again,” Scope said. “He would be interested in Domico as well when he recovers from his injury because he remembers him from his time coaching in the US.“(Anthony) has also said if Nahki doesn’t get offered anything at Bradford that he would take a look at him.”Yesterday Scope said County remained interested in forging links with Bermuda. The two parties held talks earlier this summer about Hogges becoming a feeder team for the ambitious Welsh side, who play in the Blue Square Conference.Hogges, who are fifth in the league table, take on Central Jersey at BAA Field on Thursday. Kick off is 7 pm.
