Nusum set to take on Bermuda’s best
John Barry Nusum will take to the field as a member of the MISL All-Star team when they play against the Island Soccer League’s (ISL) All-Star side on Sunday at the National Sports Centre.Nusum coached Arsenal to the ISL title this summer and was hoping to be at the helm of the local side for the All-Star weekend, but the idea was quickly quashed after he was selected to play for the visitors and reigning All-Star champions.Nusum is now keen to get out on the pitch and mix it with the best the league has to offer.“It was a good season for Arsenal this year and coaching them to the title was a thrill but I always enjoy playing the game, so for me it will be a lot of fun going up against some of my players as well as the other all stars,” said Nusum.“Because we won our title this year I had the opportunity to coach the team, but I didn’t mind doing either as both would have been fun but as of now I’m playing with the MISL guys and we are looking to win.”Although Nusum has recently recovered from a knee problem which threatened his playing career, the former Philadelphia Kixx striker is looking to put his injury days behind him and move on with the rest of his career. “My knee injury happened a while ago and it’s not really an issue anymore so I will be able to go out and help the MISL players put on a good show for the people watching,” he said.“As far as keeping the winning streak going we have to play smart football and be patient with the ball.“We want to put on a good display for the people and come out on the other side of the game winners.”The All-Star weekend will also host a Skills Challenge tomorrow at BFA field at 10 am, featuring both sets of All-Star players. The Kappa All Stars will also participate in their own version of competition with each age group represented.Awards will be given out for winners of each specific challenge. The Skills Challenge will be followed by the Commissioner’s Gala at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess Hotel, starting at 6 pm, and will be hosted by league boss David Bascome. This season’s ISL award winners will be announced on the evening including the MVP, top goalscorer, best referee, top goalkeeper, top defender, and coach of the year.
