Devonshire Cougars 6 PHC 2Devonshire Cougars made a winning start to their Dudley Eve campaign with a mammoth victory over PHC at Bernard Park on Saturday.Dennis Brown’s side were two goals up after 15 minutes through Che Brangman and Lejuan Simmons, who then added a third just before half-time.PHC’s new coach Brian (Bulla) Anderson would have been justified in having a few stern words with his side at the break. And, if so, it paid dividends within five minutes of the re-start when Aquino Grant pulled a goal back with a neat finish from Johnny Ball’s through ball. With Cougars displaying a few defensive frailties of their own, PHC grabbed a second 15 minutes later through Antwan Russell who latched on to Cecoy Robinson’s knock-down and fired home.PHC’s comeback was short-lived, however, with Cougars pulling further ahead when substitute Jamie Smith opened his account with a close range effort.Smith then turned provider with a cross which was squeezed home at the back post by Steede, who looked far more threatening playing further up the pitch then he did in his deeper role during last weekend’s Charity Cup game.Smith then added his team’s sixth with another clinical finish, this time from Simmons’ left wing cross, to complete the rout.Despite his team’s lopsided win, Cougars coach Dennis Brown saw plenty of room for improvement.“I thought we showed good football intelligence today although I wasn’t pleased with our defending in the second half,” he said. “There’s much we can still improve on and we have to learn to maintain our focus throughout games.”Brown praised Kwame Steede for his influential display, made all the more impressive considering it was only his second game back since undergoing knee surgery.“We knew we had to get Kwame a bit nearer the goal and that’s why he played further forward today. He had a very good game for us.”Cougars are next in Dudley Eve action against Southampton Rangers at BAA Field on Wednesday, September 28.PHC take on Southampton Rangers at Devonshire Rec. tomorrow night.Devonshire Cougars: C Darrell, J Butterfield, J Seymour, K Franks, Z White, Moses Steede, C Caisey, K Steede (Mark Steede, 79), S Pearman (C Clarke, 79), C Brangman, L SimmonsSubstitutes not used: J Mouchette, K TuckerGoals: Brangman, 9, Simmons, 15, 42, Smith, 72, K Steede, 77, Smith 82Bookings: Moses Steede, PearmanPHC: Q Hunt (J Wade, 45), R Richardson, C Robinson, S Codrington, J Ball, A Russell, L Bascome, A Grant, M Piper, S Philpott, T BrownSubstitutes not used: K Lambe, C Dowling, J Sealey,Goals: Grant, 55, Russell, 70Bookings: A GrantReferee: E HolmesMan of the match: L Simmons (Cougars)
