Rangers snatch first win in sea-saw battle at Oval
Southampton Rangers celebrated their first league win of the season after edging tenants PHC in this see-saw battle at Southampton Oval yesterday.Goals from Ezekiel Stoneham and Ijahmon Mallory were enough to earn Rangers maximum points in a match that could have gone either way.Zebras replied through an opportunistic strike from talisman Antwan Russell that ultimately proved to be nothing more than a consolation.Although they played in spurts, the end result was a fair one for a Rangers side that was reduced to ten men when substitute Travis Wilkinson received his marching orders for a second bookable offence in the 89th minute.Rangers showed plenty of determination in the early stages of the match and moved the ball all around the park with purpose in search of an opening. But for all their possession it was PHC who nearly took the lead when Russell flashed a low drive just wide of the upright during a counter attack that caught Rangers thin at the back.Rangers also dodged a bullet after Kevin Lambe's well-timed volley from the edge of the 18-yard box was disallowed after the linesman's flag went up for offside.Having flirted with disaster, Rangers regrouped and eventually put their noses out front, albeit with a huge slice of luck.Johnny Ball's intended back pass to ‘keeper Troy Hall was intercepted by the diminutive Reggie Lowe. And rather than go for glory Lowe unselfishly squared the ball in the middle for the onrushing Stoneham who buried his shot from yards out.Rangers' joy, though, was short-lived as a goalkeeping blunder put Zebras back into the match three minutes later. What should've been a routine clearance by Rangers ‘keeper Sean Perinchief went horribly wrong as the former Devonshire Cougars player completely missed the ball, leaving Russell with the easiest of tasks of slotting into an empty net.Russell also went close with a dipping 35 yard free-kick while Robert Richardson's powerful header brought off a fine save from Perinchief as Zebras threatened to take the lead in the closing moments of the half.Whatever Rangers coach Keith Jennings spoke to his players during the break seemed to have immediate effect as the home team started the second-half with more purpose and not surprisingly regained the lead for good in the 54th minute through a calm finish from overlapping full back Mallory.During a quick raid down the middle Vernon Perinchief's pass over the top of the Zebras' defence found the unmarked Mallory who made no mistake with his low drive from a tight angle that nestled inside the far post.Mallory's goal jolted Zebras into action and they had only themselves to blame for not capitalising when scoring seemed easier.First, Russell placed Ball's accurate cross on the middle wide and then Grant created space for himself inside the box but also dragged his shot wide.Russell also watched in agony as his 25-yard thunderbolt rattled the side netting while at the other end Adrian Burrows had a header saved off the line by PHC ‘keeper Hall.Meanwhile, Wilkinson's cameo on the pitch ended in the final minute of regulation just moments before Zebras' appeal for a penalty fell on deaf ears, much to the relief of their landlords.PHC: T Hall, S Codrington, M Lambe, R Richardson, J Ball, K Lambe (D Davis, 73 mins), C Robinson, T Brown (M Piper, 62 mins), K Hypolite (J Swan, 62 mins), A Russell, A GrantRangers: S Perinchief, M Williams, I Mallory (K Symonds, 62 mins), K Simmons, J Charles, V Perinchief (J Caisey, 80 mins), M Burch, R Lowe, Y Bean, A Burrows (T Wilkinson, 60 mins), E StonehamGoals: A Russell (PHC); E Stoneham, I Mallory (Rangers)Booked: A Grant, J Swan (PHC); S Perinchief, V Perinchief (Rangers)Sent off: T Wilkinson (Rangers)Man of the match: R Lowe (Rangers)Referee: E Holmes
