Cougars just good enough

St George’s 0 Devonshire Cougars 1Devonshire Cougars are far from being the finished article but any team that can play this poorly and win has a bright future.Cougars scrambled their way to a third consecutive Digicel Premier Division win courtesy of Jamie’s Smith second half tap-in, but the visiting side had a blunder from St George’s goalkeeper Zane Hendrickson to thank for their narrow win at Wellington Oval yesterday. On a day when Cougars’ finishing let them down once more their struggles in adapting to Dennis Brown’s new system were plain for all to see.The Devonshire club have spent the past couple of years dancing to the beat of their own drum, now Brown is in charge and he has other ideas. No longer the instinctive, attack without thinking team of yesteryear, Cougars are being asked to play with structure and discipline. It’s something they’re not completely comfortable with, yet.“It’s our third league win on the trot, so that’s good,” said Brown. “The team is still getting to know the formation and the methods of me, coming in as a new coach.“One of the things I talked about early in the season was us being disciplined as a unit, and with each game I see us getting better and better. So, I think we’re getting better as a unit.”Judging on this win over St George’s there is still plenty of room for improvement, not least upfront where Cougars’ inability to finish off the several good moves they produced will be cause for concern for Brown.Too often the final pass went astray for the visting team and their lack of cohesion and communication from back to front would have been exposed by one of the better sides in the league. Still, Brown sees room for optimism even if yesterday’s performance left him turning the air blue in frustration at times.“I see a big improvement from our first game to now,” he said, “but one thing that I know will improve over time is our finishing because we are still creating chances but not making teams pay. That will come in time.“As for communication, I think it’s about personality. What I’m trying to do is get guys to be leaders in their positions, and slowly that’s coming.”Fortunately for Cougars their last two games, against Boulevard and St George’s, have come against teams ill-equipped to expose the flaws in their game.St George’s posed little threat to a Cougars defence still trying to find its way and apart from the odd flash of inspiration from Jahron Dickinson the home side created few scoring opportunities.Cougars weren’t much better and it was somewhat fitting that the goal which decided the outcome reflected the game in general, scrappy and down to a mistake. With little more than an hour gone, Jamie Smith hammered a free kick into the St George’s wall, the ball rebounded to Shaki Pearman who lobbed a high ball into the box, Hendrickson dropped it under his cross bar and Smith tapped it in from a yard out.St George’s: Z Hendrickson, D Signor, J Warren, J Bassett, J Darrell, J Simmons, C Simmons (K Smith, 72), J Dickinson, K Ottley (J Hayward, 46), C Darrell, A Douglas (M Anderson, 76).
