Village outgun new boys

Robin Hood 2 North Village 5North Village shrugged off an early setback to earn a comfortable 5-2 win over Robin Hood at Bernard Park yesterday to remain the only unbeaten team in the Premier Division.Goals from Kaiwon Dill, Lashun Dill, Sammy DeGraff, Ralph Bean jr and an own goal paced the hosts to victory while David Outerbridge and Drewonde Bascome scored for the visitors in a losing cause. In hot and humid conditions, both teams went in search of the win with Rams skipper DeGraff paying tribute to Hood for their never say die attitude.“The conditions were hot out there on the pitch but both sides had to deal with it and we were able to manage the game and got away with the win,” said DeGraff.“They are a good side, this is their first time in the Premier Division so they have a group of guys that are both experienced and young and it was a good test for us today.“I think we got control of the game once we got our second goal but slacked off as the game wore on and that allowed them back into the game.“It was a test of character for us knowing the game was close and that we needed to refocus and get the job done.”Outerbridge silenced the Rams faithful after he netted a sensational goal to open up the scoring in the seventh minute in a pulsating first half of end-to-end football. The hosts were level on 25 minutes, however, after a goalmouth scramble saw a shot deflected through a bunch of Hood defenders and into the net.Kaiwon Dill then put the defending champions ahead five minutes later with a fine goal before Lashun Dill made it a two-goal game in the 35th minute. But the first-half scoring wasn’t done with Bascome grabbing his goal to bring his side back into the game with fans from both sides hoping for much of the same in the second period. It wasn’t to be with Village putting their stamp on the game from the whistle and dictating most of the play for long periods. It was all hands on the pump for Hood, who had to thank skipper Teddy Terceira for some last ditch tackles to keep Hood in the game before the final nail was hammered in their coffin.A defensive blunder gifted DeGraff his goal in the 72nd minute, while Terceira became a victim of bad passes, heading a ball back into the area for Bean to coolly slot home from at the back post, ending the match as a contest.“The game is a funny one and can go any way, we have been in these sort of situations before where we have gone down a goal both home and on the road so we never felt we were out of it but need to put ourselves in a position to win the game.“We could have closed down a bit better, especially on the goal but it woke us up a bit and we got control of the game and got what we needed.“There was a bit of ring rust for us, we haven’t been able to train really due to the schedule being so packed together and that has contributed to a bit of rustiness but also the cohesiveness of the team.“We are happy to remain undefeated and for the most part injury free, but there is still a long way to go.”Robin Hood: T Figuerido, J Crockwell, S Simons, T Terceira, J Duffy(K Robinson,50), A Wolfe, A Nelson(R Paul,72), D Outerbridge, D Bell, L Tota, D Bascome(D Mallory,77)Subs not used: J SimonsGoals: D Outerbridge,7, D Bascome,40Yellow: S SimonsNorth Village: P Smith, K Dill, D Tankard, T Burgess, J Dill, D Grant(M Dill,75),K Dill(T-Smith,60), S DeGraff, J Lee, R Bean, L Dill(M Saunders,83)Goals:OG,25, K Dill,30, L Dill,35, DeGraff,72, Bean,77Yellow: S DeGraffReferee: A FrancisMan of the Match: J DavisPHC 3 Dandy Town 2PHC striker Antwan Russell said he was pleased his team’s performance as they beat Dandy Town at Southampton Oval.Cecoy Robinson, Lonnie Bascome and Shakir Smith all scored for PHC while Aljame Zuill and Damon Ming netted for the visitors.“It was a hard fought game between two very good sides. I thought we had the upper hand in the first half and should have been up by a few goals by they made it hard for us,” said Russell.“I think they came with the right mindset but we knew what we would be up against and we just had to weather the storm when they came out to attack and make the most of our chances when we got them.“We can beat the top teams in the Island, we aren’t going to get ahead of ourselves with this result, we will let our play on the field do the talking.“The Dudley Eve is out of the way and we can focus on the main objective of the season which is to win the league title.”The win moves the Warwick club level on points with champions North Village, but have played one game more than their city rivals.Somerset 3 Boulevard 2Dion Stovell scored a hat-trick as Somerset Trojans made it two wins on the trot with this victory over Boulevard on Saturday night.Stovell scored his first in the first minute of action before Blazers skipper Ajani Gibbons put the hosts on level terms midway through the second half.Stovell then restored Trojans’ lead in the 75th minute only to be pegged through a Nico Smith goal three minutes later. The Somerset striker completed his treble in the last minute of regulation to seal all three points for the visitors. The newly promoted side are making a steady climb up the table with their back-to-back wins after two early losses and now sit comfortably in fifth place.
