Dandy Town grind out win

St David’s 0 Dandy Town 2Newly crowned Dudley Eve champs Dandy Town got their league campaign back on track after seeing off a gutsy St David’s at Lords yesterday.Goals either side of the break from Seion Darrell and Aljame Zuill earned Hornets maximum points against a St David’s side that refused to roll over and play dead.Warriors created plenty of opportunities to come away with at least a share of the spoils. But time and time again they squandered their chances which ultimately proved costly as Hornets bounced back from an away loss to PHC in their previous league outing.“It wasn’t pretty but we knew we had to come down here and grind it out,” said Hornets coach Jomar Wilkinson. “I felt that in the last third we created some chances but didn’t take them all. But I thought 2-0 was a fair result.”Warriors’ coach Kameron Fox took defeat all in stride.“I give kudos to Dandy Town and kudos to my team as well for working hard,” he said. “Town got a great goal out of nothing in the first-half and from then on we had to chase the game.”Town made two changes to the team that denied North Village a hat trick of Dudley Eve titles last week, with captain Raymond Beach and Fabian Frankson forced out with niggling injuries. Still, the pair’s omissions did little to affect Hornets’ chemistry as they set about stamping their authority on proceedings from the outset, with diminutive captain Damon Ming a constant threat on the left flank. The visitors nearly drew first blood when Warriors’ ‘keeper Corey Richardson raced off his line to thwart Jahmel Swan with his feet. St David’s almost paid the price again for affording Hornets far too much space as the unmarked Saki Tuzo blasted two attempts just wide of the uprights. Tuzo also had a diagonal cross crash onto the bar, with the Islanders defence frozen solid. To their credit, though, Warriors never lost their shape and after absorbing some pressure threatened to turn the game on its head when Anthony Burchall’s vicious shot from beyond the 18-yard box rattled the woodwork, with Hornets ‘keeper Treadwell Gibbons Jr a virtual spectator. But it was Hornets who eventually took the lead for good right on the stroke of half-time, and what a beauty it was. Tuzo’s pass in the middle was dummied by Heys Wolfe and then met by the right boot of Darrell, who planted a 25 yard sizzler inside the bottom left corner.Veteran striker Zuill then offically opened his account at his new club in the 75th minute after scrambling a Wolfe rebound across the line to put the match beyond St David’s’ reach. With Hornets threatening to run away with the match in the closing stages, St David’s blew two golden opportunities to claw their way back in contention. First captain Landro Minors lobbed over with only Gibbons to beat and then Otis Minors curled a shot just wide of the post.Zuill, Wolfe, Darrell and sub Wolde Place also went close to adding to the visitors’ tally as Hornets finished the match strongly.St David’s: C Richardson, A Lugo, T Govia, K Bean, T Webb (I Van Putttn, 62 mins), A Cannonier, A Burchall (A Crockwell, 67 mins), O Minors, F Crockwell, K Minors (D Lambert, 62 mins), L Minors (capt).
