Sending off proves costly for PHC

North Village bounced back from their Dudley Eve final defeat with a thrilling victory against ten man PHC at Bernard Park yesterday. With ten minutes remaining Village looked in danger of heading to a second successive defeat having lost to Dandy Town at the National Sports Centre in midweek. However, they struck three late goals to see off a spirited Zebras side who were reduced to ten men when Aquino Grant was sent off for a reckless tackle on Kaiwon Dill midway through the second half.Prior to Grant's dismissal PHC had seemed the likely winners but Village's numerical advantage told during the dying stages with the visitors unable to fend off Rams' late onslaught.Perhaps their disappointing Dudley Eve defeat accounted for Village's sluggish start with the defending Premier Division champions finding themselves two goals down in the first ten minutes.PHC full back Johnny Ball struck the opener when he cut inside youngster Mahlah Saunders before firing a low shot which took a slight defection on its way past Village goalkeeper Jason Williams.Village's defence was caught flat-footed again moments later when Grant released strike partner Antwan Russell who waltzed his into the box before slotting home past Williams.Russell's strike seemed to jolt Village into life and on the half hour mark they reduced the deficit when teenage striker Jahquan DeShields curled in a superb effort from the edge of the box.And on the stroke of half-time the lively DeShields completed Village's first half comeback with another cool finish after being put clean through by Sammy DeGraff's slide rule pass.Despite surrendering a two-goal lead, PHC seemed undeterred in their pursuit for victory and went ahead on 55 minutes when Grant threaded a through ball for Russell who calmly slid the ball past Williams.Although Village were having plenty of possession they were rarely troubling PHC's backline until Grant had a rush of blood of the head and caught Dill with a late challenge midway inside the visitor's half. The sending off proved to be the flashpoint of the game and acted as a springboard for Village's stunning comeback with the hosts drawing level on 81 minutes when DeGraff converted from the penalty spot after Ball had fouled Lashun Dill. With less than five minutes remaining, Village poured forward sensing PHC were on the ropes and took the lead when Ralph Bean stabbed home a rebound after DeShields had struck the crossbar with a curling effort.Logan Alexander then made sure of the win with a close range finish after Zebras keeper Troy Hall had parried Bean's bobbling shot from the edge of the area.Having been thwarted in their quest for the first major piece of silverware for the season by Hornets, Village coach Shaun Goater said it was importance his team returned to winning ways against PHC.“Today's game couldn't come quick enough for us because it was important for us to get our Dudley Eve defeat out of our system,” said Goater, whose side have taken maximum points from their opening four games.“Although I was disappointed with our poor start to the game, I was almost pleased when PHC scored their second goal because I knew it would serve as a wake up call for our players.“We hadn't been at the races until that point but I thought we showed a lot of character to comeback the way we did.”North Village: J Williams, M Saunders (D Grant, 15) K Dill, D Tankard, J Boyles (L Dill, 75) S DeGraff, K Dill (M Dill, 80) R Bean, P Smith, J DeShields.
