Improving Parish in thick of the promotion race
Hamilton Parish goalkeeper Nigel Burgess believes his side are sitting in an ideal position in the First Division standings at the half-way mark of the season.Peppers go into the Christmas break tied in second place with Flanagan’s Onions on 19 points, four points behind Wolves with a match coming up on the first weekend of the New Year against the leaders.Parish started the campaign slowly with games against Wolves, X’Roads and Onions, claiming just four points out of the nine that were available. But they then began climbing up the table with wins over Prospect, Paget, Devonshire Cols and Ireland Rangers and grabbed another three points with a 1-0 win over Somerset Eagles on Sunday. Dejon Simmons scored the lone goal. The veteran ‘keeper reckons the best is still to come.“It has been progressive, we had a hard start to the season and after getting a few results out of those games we went on a run that now sees us in the top three in the league and fighting for promotion.” said Burgess.“Our first four or five games was our hardest run, so it was a good to come out of that relatively unscathed and find some form that has seen us in the position we are in now.“Now that we are heading into the break four points back of Wolves, our goal will remain the same . . . trying to win the league and gain automatic promotion.“We are in a good position although we are chasing them. It may come down to our game against them and those three points . . . that’s our first game in the new year and we expect to get a result against every team we play.”The second half of the First Division season should be interesting with seven teams within ten points of the top spot, with everything to play for. With the late transfers of Ian Coke, Marcelos Dill and 16-year-old Donovan Thompson, Parish should be among the frontrunners as teams push for promotion.“The season is close right now with seven teams within ten points of each other, so it can come down to any game and it may come down to the final few games and needing a result from others but that is what the game is about.“Everyone has the same mindset at the beginning and you must make the most of your chances when they present themselves.”Elsewhere on the weekend, Onions got a huge boost heading into the break with their 4-1 win over X’Roads courtesy of a Keston Lewis brace.Peter Robey and Lee Osborne also scored for the winners while Khomeini Talbot netted in the loss for X’Roads.Hobte Burrows scored twice as leaders Wolves beat Paget 6-0.Helping Burrows were Derrick Brangman, Jared Peniston, Marcus Ming, and Tamauri Tucker.Young Men’s Social Club got goals from Gernell Darrell, Callon Burns and Kaijah Davis in their 3-0 victory over Ireland Rangers.BAA won a nine-goal thriller against Prospect thanks in large part to a hat-trick from Willie Clemens.BAA came out 6-3 winners with Ian Simmons, Dante Taylor and London Roberts also netted while Shaki Swan scored twice for Prospect and Kieran Bennett added the other.
