Still work to do for high flying Town, says Ming

By Derek deChabertDandy Town winger Damon Ming is still far from satisfied with his team’s performances regardless of their league position as they prepare for their Friendship Trophy preliminary game against Southampton Rangers tonight at BAA Field.Key wins over title rivals in the first half of the campaign have left the side in prime position for a league title but the speedy winger wants his side to kick on and rectify some of their issues and could use tonight’s match as the perfect time. The Dudley Eve champions go into the match tonight as firm favourites to lift the Friendship.“We have put ourselves in a good position to start the second half of the season. We started off a bit slow and that put us behind but we picked up the pace and are right in the thick of things,” said Ming.“The Dudley Eve was a good competition for us to get ready for the other important things, and to pick up the first cup of the year was good for the club and we will look to made inroads in this as well.“Every week we are growing, we haven’t reached our heights just yet. One factor is that we haven’t moved the ball around as we would have liked to and that is something that can be worked on, so we are still looking to improve in all aspects.“The team have come together, working for one another and it is a great buzz around the club right now.”A good sign for the side is that they have beaten most of the their title contenders including Devonshire Cougars and defending champions North Village, results that could help them in the long run in the psychological department.Such results against the cream of the crop have suggested they could be hoisting more silverware come season’s end.“The season we have had so far shows that anything can happen because we started with a loss to Boulevard and then beat all those that are close to us in the title race, so it goes to show that hard work pays off,” added Ming.“Those win against the title contenders aren’t anything just yet because we haven’t won anything in terms of the league. The second half will be different from the first but we have put ourselves in a good position to make a push for the title come March.“We are going to continue with our hard work and hopefully it pays off.”A major component in the Hornets arsenal is midfielders Shaun Brown and Jamel Swan, who is a candidate for MVP this year. The pair have been in the St John’s Road club’s engine room for a few years now and have emerged as coach Jomar Wilkinson’s first choice pairing in the heart of the side.Heaping huge praise on the two players, the Bermuda international believes the best is yet to come from the pair who dictate the way the team operate.“Jamel and Shaun in our midfield have been influential in a lot of the things we do, they have played together for three years now and have a good understanding of one another and it helps the team as whole.“It is good to have them in the team and I just hope they continue because it is good to have new ideas and talent in the ranks.“Not only do they complement each other well but they also allow one another the freedom to play their game while not acting out of character.”Also in action tonight at BAA Field are Somerset Eagles who play Young Men’s Social Club in the Shield competition, beginning at 7pm, with Town’s clash with Rangers set for a 9pm kick-off.The winners play the winners of Boulevard and Somerset Trojans on Sunday at a venue to be confirmed. Also tonight, Wolves meet X’Roads in a Shield match at Devonshire Rec at 7pm.
