Cougars take comfortable ride into second round

Devonshire Cougars 4 Robin Hood 1With their attacking advances both isolated and ineffective, Robin Hood rarely looked capable of making it through to the next round of the Friendship Trophy against home team Cougars at Devonshire yesterday. While both teams had difficulty mastering the wet and slippery pitch, there was never any doubt that Cougars would emerge victors with Tumani and Kwame Steede and Domico Coddington playing dominating roles in spearheading the home side.Cougars took a comfortable 2-0 lead at the interval through Lejaun Simmons and Darius Cox and then put the result out of reach with two additional goals from Coddington and Tumani Steede in the second half. The conditions made it difficult and it was anything but an engrossing affair with play in the opening half largely sloppy. But Cougars were always in command as Hood failed to find any sort of rhythm.Lejaun Simmons gave Cougars a deserved 1-0 lead after seven minutes and centre-back Darius Cox made it 2-0 after 13 minutes.Hood offered fight and determiniation which delivered them little success and their first threat on goal came after 30 minutes when their best player Drewonde Bascome fired over from outside the box.Hood had another shot at goal 10 minutes later but forward Dunte Albouy hit his effort from 22 yards just wide of the post.Cougars continued to dictate in the second half with striker Mark Steede hammering a fierce shot into the chest of goalkeeper Jason Simons which he did well to smother before eventually clearing. The home side, however, were unable to break the defence down to add a third goal and kill off Hood’s challenge. The visitors came slowly into the game with some momentum after the failure of Cougars to capitalise on their territorial advantage and Hood were rewarded for their hard work when Daniel Andrade netted from just inside the penalty box after 55 minutes. Andrade got a neat pass from hard-working midfielder Drewonde Bascome to briefly put his side back in the game. For a short period Cougars had to struggle to regain an edge before Tumani Steede coolly their set up Coddington to make it 3-1 after 60 minutes.Striker Mark Steede followed up by putting a blistering drive just wide for Cougars after 62 minutes.Tumani Steede made it 4-1 after 78 minutes against a now jaded Hood team with little punch left, scoring after being set up by Coddington.Cougars: K.Trott; J.Butterfield, K.Franks, D.Cox, J.Seymour; C.Caisey, Kw.
