Burgess: Parish must build on Shield win

Hamilton Parish goalkeeper Nigel Burgess believes their victory in the Shield final can act as a catalyst in their push for promotion from the First Division. The Hot Peppers defeated promotion rivals X’Roads 2-0 in the Shield final at the National Sports Centre on New Year’s Day courtesy of goals from Ian Coke and Jahkai Outerbridge. While defending their Shield crown was one of the club’s main objectives at the start of the season, Burgess insists returning to the top flight has always been their number one priority.“Winning the Shield has given us an extra boost, but we know it’s a cup competition and our main goal is getting one of the promotion spots,” said Burgess.“Obviously promotion is the main goal for all clubs in the First Division and that’s what we’re shooting towards and victory in the Shield final has given us confidence coming out of the Christmas break.“However, winning the Shield won’t mean anything if we can’t carry this form going forward. We have to push on through the second period and look to get maximum points in each outing.”The Hot Peppers, coached by former Devonshire Colts boss Keishon Smith, are currently fourth in the First Division, three points behind second place Flanagan’s Onions.X’Roads are also in the thick of the promotion hunt in third position, one point ahead of Parish, but Burgess believes his team may now have the psychological advantage having beaten Don Vickers’ side in the Shield final.“Winning or losing the cup wouldn’t have been make or break for us, but it was a good feeling to beat X’Roads as they have got the better of us in the past few years and enjoyed success against us,” said Burgess, a Bermuda international.“The last time we beat them was the year we got promoted so this was a major hurdle climbed for us and we can take this into our next meeting with them and the belief that we can beat them.“They are a very consistent team and always in the hunt for promotion so it’s always good to beat another promotion contender as well as overcoming a mental block for us in regards to them.”In diminutive strike duo Ian Coke and Shayne Hollis, Hamilton Parish have arguably the most dangerous strike partnerships in the second tier, with Burgess backing the pair to fire the Hot Peppers firmly into the promotion picture.“Shane and Ian are top quality players and could get into any side and give us a huge lift with their performances,” he said. “We look forward to both their playmaking on the field as well as their leadership.”Parish take on league leaders Wolves at Devonshire Rec. on Sunday at 12.30pm.
