Trojans’ Iris slapped with lengthy ban

Somerset Trojans have suffered a massive setback with the loss of influential player Zaki Iris who will miss the rest of the season after being hit with a lengthy ban.The talented fullback has been suspended for two-and-a half years by Bermuda Football Association (BFA) for exhibiting threatening behaviour which brought Premier and Player Development League (PDL) matches into disrepute.Iris was not present at his disciplinary hearing when the sanctions were imposed against him.Trojans now have seven-days in which to appeal against the BFA’s ruling, something Somerset Cricket Club president Alfred Maybury said the club hasn’t ruled out at this stage.“We haven’t made a final decision yet, so nothing has been ruled out. We haven’t ruled out anything,” he said.It is understood that the consensus at Somerset is that Iris’ punishment for the offences he is alleged to have committed is “too harsh”.But when asked to comment specifically about the sanctions imposed on his player, Maybury opted to hold his cards close to his chest.“I don’t want to do that until I have seen all of the paper work and then I can talk about exactly what we are feeling, where we are going and what we are going to do,” he said.I know that things are being done and I should get that information shortly and then we will go from there.“Once I get the information about this whole thing then we will make a decision. Until I see everything then we will go from there ... and hopefully it will be soon.”Iris is alleged to have head butted a player during an October 2011 PDL match involving Trojans and St George’s Colts. He is also alleged to have stomped on a player and forced to leave the field after being sent off during a Premier match involving Trojans and St George’s Colts and fighting in another Premier clash between his club and Southampton Rangers. It is believed that both of these incidents took place last November, which resulted with Iris being ruled out of Trojans’ Friendship Trophy final with eventual winners North Village Rams at the National Sports Centre through suspension. As well as appealing, it is understood that the player could also have his ban reduced under condition he undergo anger management sessions recommended by the BFA.Iris’ alleged transgressions betray the great lengths Somerset have gone to in recent years to curb unruly behaviour in “every aspect at the club”.“As an organisation we are doing what we need to do to make sure anybody that walks through our gates for any reason is safe,” Maybury said. “The club is doing what it needs to do to ensure that anybody that walks through those gates is safe from every aspect.”As it stands, Iris will not be eligible to resume his football career until the 2014-15 campaign.
