Colts in surprise victory over St David’s

Devonshire Colts 4 St David’s 3There’s something about the FA Cup that brings the best out of Devonshire Colts. The First Division side pulled off a stunning upset when they dumped Premier rivals St David’s out of the prestigious competition with a gutsy display at Police Field yesterday.Twice the home team came from behind before Dimitri Butterfield’s late own goal completed what earlier might have seemed the unthinkable.Keimo Gardner, Zuri Darrell and skipper Lozendro Symonds were all on target for Colts while Warriors replied through goals from Aaron and Fiqre Crockwell.St David’s defender Butterfield had an afternoon he would rather quickly forget as he conceded a 74th minute penalty that put Colts ahead 3-2 and then turned the eventual game winner into his own net eight- minutes from time.Afterwards, Colts coach Jay Bean paid homage to his players’ never-say-die attitude and clinical finishing that ultimately proved to be the difference between the two sides.“We put away half of the chances we got and it paid of in the end,” he said. “We have been showing character all season, but it’s just that we have been getting some hard calls against us.“But these guys have battled all season and today we finally got something to go our way.”Bean hopes yesterday’s win will have inspired his players to go all the way in a competition they won as a First Division side four-years ago.“It will be great to go all the way, but we have to put in the hard work because no one is going to give it to us,” he said. “It’s only going to get harder for us from here, but you have to beat the best if you want to achieve anything in football.”Colts were vulnerable in defence from the outset and Warriors took only three- minutes to exploit their hosts’ weakness as Aaron Crockwell’s crisp right-footed shot from outside of the 18-yard box flew past the diminutive Treshon Smith. The home team squandered two chances in front of goal before midfielder Gardner brought the two sides level with a curling effort in the 21st minute that drifted into the top left corner.Colts suffered a setback when midfielder Zan Khan limped off with a knee injury and things quickly went from bad to worse as Warriors regained the lead on 36 minutes when captain Fiqre Crockwell buried his spotkick after team-mate Zachary Morris was fouled in the area.It didn’t long for whatever words Colts coach Bean said to his players during the break to sink in when play resumed as Darrell’s glancing header from a setpiece found its intended target in the 51st minute to level the scores.Colts then went ahead on 74 minutes when Symonds converted from the penalty spot after Butterfield was penalized for a foul in the area.Warriors, though, refused to roll over and equalized through skipper Crockwell who squeezed his shot inside Smith’s near post in heavy traffic.Deadlocked at 3-3 with time running out a replay seemed inevitable until Butterfield turned Callin Maybury’s tame effort into his own goal, to hand Colts victory on a silver plattar.Devonshire Colts: T Smith, V Lambe, J Butterfield, J Samuels, E Wilkin, T Foote (O Ray, 52 mins), L Symonds (capt), K Gardner, Z Darrell, J Khan (D Williams, 31 mins), C MayburyGoals: K Gardner, Z Darrell, L Symonds (pen),St David’s: C Richardson, A Cannonier, T Webb-Caisey, E Robinson (O Minors, 78 mins), D Butterfield, K Bean, Z Morris (G O’Brien jr, 78 mins), A Lugo, F Crockwell (capt), A Burchall, A CrockwellBooked: Z Morris, O MinorsGoals: A Crockwell, F Crockwell, D Buttrefield (own goal)Man of the match: K Gardner (Colts)Referee: R Ming
