Festival ‘a chance for young players to learn’

The National Academy and Dandy Town Under-14’s both recorded wins in their opening matches of the Clyde Best Invitational Festival yesterday at the National Sports Centre (NSC).The Academy side won a closely contested match against Richmond Harriers 1-0 while Town edged out PHC 2-1.The festival, which was cancelled last year due to financial and organisational problems, saw exciting games on the opening day that included female matches for the first time.“It is pleasing to see the young players out here playing and gaining experience from playing quality opposition,” said Clyde Best. “It is pleasing to see that they are receptive in receiving the information that their coaches are giving them.“The style that they play shows that they are listening to what is being taught to them and they can only get better with playing against the best players on the Island.“It bodes well for future, not just their careers but also the future of the sport in Bermuda going forward.”Overseas clubs Virginia FC Girls and Princeton SC both started their campaigns yesterday against a Bermuda Senior Women’s Select and North Village Under-16 respectively at the NSC.Play resumes today with six games on the cards at the NSC North Field, beginning at 12pm.The Festival finishes tomorrow with all games to be played at the National Stadium prior to the FA Cup final between North Village and Dandy Town. The first game is scheduled for 10am.The local sides competing are PHC Zebras Under-14s and Under-16s, North Village Under-16s, Dandy Town Under-14s, Richmond Harriers, a Bermuda Select Women’s team and a Senior Women’s national side.Admission is free.
