Campbell: Deep squad was key Hornets’ success

It is often said a team is only as strong as its bench. And this certainly proved to be the case for Dandy Town Hornets during the 2011/12 football season. The past domestic campaign saw Hornets win three trophies (Premier Championship, FA Cup and Dudley Eve Trophy) for the first time in a single season since 1993-94.That treble also included a first League and FA Cup double in eight-years.Club president, Wayne Campbell, owes Hornets’ overwhelming success to the team’s strong bench.“I believe our biggest strength was if we had players missing we had others that could step in and get the job done,” the former Town sweeper said. “If we had injuries or suspensions we had adequate replacements.”Campbell also attributes a hard work ethic to Hornets’ treble winning season.“The players realised what they had to do and then put in the necessary hard work,” he said. “Without the hard work it wouldn’t have paid off.“They done the work and what they put in was what they achieved.”The former Hornets skipper said he wasn’t overly surprised to see his club soar to great heights this past season.“I always thought the team was good,” he said. “but it all just had to come together and apparently it did this season. If you put things together properly then you get rewarded.”Campbell believes the best is yet to come from the Pembroke club.“I think they can get better especially when we introduce some more youngsters to the team,” he said. “It’s already a young team and so they can only get better and there’s always room for improvement.”After clinching the Premier Championship with two games to spare, Hornets handed arch-rivals North Village Rams their heaviest loss (5-2) in a FA Cup final to end the season with a bang.Ex-Town star Nahki Wells said he never doubted his former team-mates would get the better of Rams on the day.“I knew Town would beat Village being they had the psychological edge of having beating them a few times during the season,” the Bradford City striker said. “They showed guts to beat Village 5-2 in a final, which is great because Village are a very experienced team with a lot of good players.”In winning a sixth overall Premier Championship Hornets have earned the right to fly Bermuda’s banner in next year’s Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship.“The players are looking forward to the CFU Club Championship and also the club,” Campbell said. “We are all looking ahead to it and so have to start preparing for it now rather than next year.”
