Minors remembered as Somerset retire jersey
The jersey of late Somerset Trojans skipper Rudy Minors is to be officially retired later this year.Plans are currently in the works to have Minors’ number three shirt framed and presented to family members prior to the start of Trojans’ 2012-13 home opener.Another framed jersey is to be put on display for all to observe at Somerset Cricket Club.“It’s definitely in the works and is definitely going to be done,” said former Trojans defender Larry (Muscles) Hunt. “We want to frame two of his jerseys and present one to his wife and the other to the club, that’s the plan.“And I’m hoping we can make it official prior to Somerset’s first home game of the new season.”Ex-Trojans skipper Dennis Brown says retiring the number three jersey would be a fitting tribute to his late mentor who had a profound influence on his career.“I think it would be a good idea because Rudy gave Somerset many good years of service as a player and coach and even after he had finished coaching he was always around to lend his assistance,” Brown said. “I feel it would be a good thing to retire his jersey.”Former Trojans skipper Minors died earlier this month at the age of 69 following a long illness. He is perhaps best remembered as the man who captained Trojans to three successive triple crown championships (League, Friendship Trophy and FA Cup) in the late 1960s.He also made a number of appearances for Bermuda at the international level where he performed just as admirably as a solid defender.Brown said his mentor’s death was a huge loss.“He is a big loss to football and the Somerset community in general because he was a person who always looked out for your best interest,” the Devonshire Cougars coach added. “Rudy was the coach who trusted me as an 18-year old to captain Somerset’s senior team, so he had a big influence on me.”
