Dutch legend Davids tohelp kick off Street Tournament

Coming to Bermuda: Former Dutch ace Edgar Davids

Former Dutch International Edgar Davids will travel to Bermuda in October to help organise a Street Football Tournament being run by the newly formed Bermuda Street Football Association (BSFA).The BSFA was established by a socially conscious group that includes top coach Andrew Bascome with the aim of enhancing the quality of life in the community by improving social involvement in neighbourhoods. The concept is a spin-off from the highly successful Dutch Street Soccer Association (SVBN) spearheaded by ex-journalist Humberto Tan and Davids who made 74 appearances for Holland between 1994 and 2005.Bascome said: “Through Richard Calderon (ex-BFA president) I was able to get this relationship with Edgar Davids who promotes street football throughout the world.“He just had a tournament in Holland with about 8,000 participants. They do it as something to help the social ills and the ministry of Holland supports it.“We now have the option of putting something like that on in Bermuda and have also been invited to the Street Football World Cup in Aruba (in December) and all expenses will be paid.“We are looking to have as many teams as we can with the aim of selecting the players to go off to the Street Football World Cup.”The upcoming tournament will see teams of four play on hard surfaces either at the netball court of tennis facilities at Bernard Park.“The game has to be played on the street and what that does is that it brings good habits because you have to stand up and can't dive in,” Bascome said. “It also gives you the ability to go around people so it does have good purposes“This Street Football Tournament will not be too structured whereas players need jerseys. It will be just like how some of us used to play backyard football with jeans and cut off shorts and we really want to target the guys out there that are not involved in any type of football.”Bascome said Street Football would give participants another positive alternative to anti-social activities.“Especially with the social climate we have now hopefully something like this will address that,” he added. “We can start it up just for neighbourhood communities and then we can get together and have little tournaments and Egdar Davids, who is coming here in October, is the driving force behind all of this.”The BSFA intend to stage the inaugural National Street Football Day next month and have Street Football programmes within local communities by July. The fledgling association also has plans of becoming a registered charity and joining forces with the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Recreation's existing after school programmes.
