New boy Swan looks to make early impression
Bermuda Hogges new boy Jamal Swan believes his high-tempo style of play will be ideally suited to the Premier Development League (PDL).The all-action midfielder, who has arguably been one of the most consistent performers in the top flight over the past few seasons, is among several new additions to the Hogges squad.Bristling with confidence after helping his club Dandy Town to the championship title, FA Cup and Dudley Eve, Swan wants to use the Hogges as a platform to prove he can play at a higher level.“The Hogges will be a new experience for me and I’m very much looking forward to the new season and, of course, I want to show I can play at a higher level,” said the 20-year-old.“I want to show everybody what I can do as I’ve already shown what I can do in Bermuda.“I think my game will be well suited to the PDL as I play with a lot of pace and power. I’ve just got to try my best and see where that takes me.”With the Caribbean Cup just a few months away, Swan believes he can force his way into the national team reckoning should he sufficiently impress the Hogges coaches.“The senior national team is an option for me, I’ve always wanted to play for Bermuda at the highest level,” said Swan, who was prevented from playing for the Hogges last term due to work commitments.“I have some experience as I’ve played for the national squad at the youth level and Dandy Town in the CFU Club Championships.”It was while playing for Hornets at the 2011 CFU Championships in Trinidad against Defence Force, when Swan sustained a potential career-threatening eye injury. As a precaution, the youngster has to wear Edgar Davids-style glasses to protect his eye but insists the injury has not diluted his combative nature.“I still have to wear the glasses because of the eye (injury),” he said. “(The injury) has been a slight inconvenience but it doesn’t bother me now.”Hogges start the PDL season with a trio of home games at BAA Field. Up first will be a match against New Jersey Rangers next Friday, followed by a visit from Brooklyn Knights two days later before facing Jersey Express on May 26.Maurice Lowe’s side, who secured a mid-table position with their best ever points tally last season, then embark on a road trip on June 2 when they will play four matches in seven days, against Westchester Flames, Brooklyn Knights, Long Island Rough Riders and Jersey Express. They finish the season with three games on home soil against Long Island Rough Riders, new franchise Baltimore Bohemians and Westchester Flames.
