Hogges continue late revival

Bermuda Hogges 2 Baltimore Bohemians 1Bermuda Hogges continued their end of the season recovery after a lengthy losing streak with a second successive victory against Baltimore Bohemians.Three days after defeating Long Island Rough Riders in their first home win of the season, Hogges claimed Bohemians’ scalp in an equally impressive fashion at BAA Field yesterday.Bizarrely, considering their staggering nine-game losing run, Hogges would finish just one point shy of last season’s best-ever total, which saw them finish sixth, should they beat Westchester Flames in next weekend’s curtain call. And while the highest position Hogges can possibly hope for this time around is eighth, at least their recent upturn in results will act as a timely fillip ahead of next month’s Digicel Caribbean Cup.Against the league’s new-boys Bohemians, Hogges fielded a healthy sprinkling of senior national team regulars as well as several youngsters who have an outside chance of boarding the plane to Cayman Islands for Bermuda’s first round group games.Somewhat fittingly, it was two players key to the national team’s plans this summer, Antwan Russell and Keishen Bean, who helped Hogges to victory with goals either side of half time.Russell, the Hogges skipper, gave the hosts a 21st minute lead from the penalty spot after Lashun Dill had been brought down in the box by Bohemians’ defender Hugh Roberts. But Bohemians were causing problems of their own and would have drawn level but for the defensive heroics of Roger Lee, who headed off the line after goalkeeper Troy Hall had spilled a low cross. On the stroke of half-time Bohemians’ pressure paid off when Roberts redeemed his earlier mistake by heading home a corner kick, which assistant referee Tracy Adams adjudged to have crossed the line despite the Hogges’ protests that Lee, again, had cleared off the line.Hearts were in mouths shortly after the interval when Jeremy Raley found space on the edge the box and, spotting Hall off his line, chipped the ball over the back peddling keeper who was thankful to see the bounce to safety after striking the crossbar.Hogges were continuing to create plenty of chances themselves, however, and should have pulled ahead when Russell latched onto Bean’s through ball but seemed to be caught in two minds, inexplicably running the ball out of play before he was able to pull the trigger.Moments later Bean found himself bearing down on goal but his touch took the ball too wide while rounding the keeper, leaving himself with an impossible angle to steer the ball towards goal.Hogges did manager to find the winner they richly deserved on 71 minutes when Bean headed home from close range after being picked out with a pinpoint cross by winger Domico Coddington.Maurice Lowe, the Hogges coach, put his team’s improved results down to better finishing, and believed it was important the team finished the season strongly heading into the Digcel Cup.“I think the difference is that we’re starting to take our chances and so the results are starting to go for us,” he said. “We have always had good players and a few bad results didn’t make them bad players.“The positive results definitely helps improve our confidence and if we can get a result next weekend we will have got positive results from almost half of our games.“We’re a little bit behind where would have liked to have been this season, but we’re looking at a strong finish heading into the national team competitions this summer.”Bermuda Hogges: T Hall, T Burgess, S Darrell, R Lee, D Cox, J Swan, T Ming (D Bascome, 81), K Bean, D Coddington (M Thomas, 88), A Russell (D Ming, 78, L Dill (Z Lewis, 38)Substitutes not used: T BellGoals: Russell (pen), 21, Bean, 71Yellow card: BurgessBaltimore Bohemians: J Tatum, L Woodberry, M Ferdandez, J Meyer, H Roberts, D Vaeth (G Cannon, 78), J Raley (P Caringi, 70), C Barreiro (C Somerville, 76), B Graham, V Onwuka, M KansayeSubstitutes not used: R Benzing, K McCord, M MalloryGoals: Roberts, 44Yellow card: SomervilleReferee: M BarbulescuMan of the match: Lee (Hogges)
